Title: SP Super Bowl Special
Description: At 4:03 on a dark and wet Saturday afternoon the Southern Pacific's 15-car special for Super Bowl XX was about to back in to New Orlean Union Passenger Terminal. SP Train AVHOM
Title: SP Train AVHOM
Description: The Southern Pacific’s AVHOM (Avondale to Houston Manifest) was leaning into the curve at Raceland Junction, Louisiana with EIGHT locomotives: SSW GP40-2 7632, SD40T-2 8569, GP40-2 7623, NS SD60 6629, NS SD50S 6504, and GP40-2’s 7645, 7661 and 7633. It was common for the SP to put two or three sets of power on this train, because there were more eastbound trains than westbound, and doing this got the extra power back to Houston.

Long Bridge behind 10 locomotives: SD45R 7546, SSW SD45 8978, SD45R’s 7517 and 7550, SD40T-2 8321, SSW GP30 5009, GP35 6653, GP20R 4102 and GP9R’s 3877 and 3816. SSW 6681
Title: SSW 6681
Description: An estbound Espee train -- probably the HOSOM -- nears the end of its journey from Houston to New Orleans as it approaches Avondale Yard. The motive power was a pair of GP35's and GP49 4604, and the appearance of Cotton Belt 6681 -- the highest numbered SP/SSW GP35 -- makes quite a contrast with that of Southern 2670! The train had 151 cars and SP caboose 1903.

SP SD70M 9818
Title: SP SD70M 9818
Description: The Southern Pacific only owned 25 SD70M units, so finding one on the front of a train five years after the UP merger was pretty special. The 9818 was on a run-through train from the Norfolk Southern and was parked on the NS Outer Belt at Marconi Drive waiting for a UP crew. The train's other locomotives were SP B23-7 5113 and UP-patched SD50 5102, still painted in Rio Grande colors.

SSW GP40-2 7248
Title: SSW GP40-2 7248
Description: One-year-old Cotton Belt GP40-2 7248 -- along with Espee SD40T-2's 8529, 8275 and 8323 -- was stopped on the east approach to the Huey P. Long Bridge. The 7248 had been the lead unit on an eastbound stack train which they had just delivered to Norfolk Southern, and then they returned here running light. After about 15 minutes, an NS crew arrived at the Central Avenue grade crossing with run-through train No. 193. Instead of sending a crew to pick up 193, these four units coupled on to the train -- which had SP B30-7 7764 and SD45R's 7405 and 7402 -- and it went across the river with seven engines.

Cotton Belt 7248 was one of the last GP40-2's built. This group consisted of 34 units, SP 7240-7247 and SSW 7248-7273, built in October and November 1984. The only newer GP40-2's were Florida East Coast 432, built in December 1985; and FEC 433 and 434, built in December 1986. The caboose on the right, in the New Orleans Public Belt's East Bridge Yard, was MP 13815.

Shrewsbury Road
Title: Shrewsbury Road
Description: Three trains are on the west end of the Norfolk Southern's BACK BELT at Shrewsbury Road. Cotton Belt 8040 and Espee 8026 are on a westbound American President Companies (APC) stack train. These cars arrived from Atlanta on NS train No. 219 and are bound for Long Beach as SP train AVAXT. On the next track is KCS caboose 342 on KCS train No. 55. The KCS has just delivered the train to the NS, and it is on its way to the NS Oliver yard. On the right is KCS train No. 140, the BATON ROUGE TURN, departing from that railroad's West Yard. No. 140 has GP30's 4112, 4103, 4119 and 4106, 48 cars, and caboose 348; but one of the geeps will be set out up the road for use as a switch engine. The Espee train is waiting for a route through East Bridge Junction and onto the Huey P. Long Bridge, while KCS No. 140 needs to get onto the Illinois Central. Since 1985 KCS trains have used trackage rights over the IC to enter and leave New Orleans.

Title: SP GP9R 3435
Description: The Norfolk Southern's run-through train from Birmingham to the Espee passes through East City Junction on the NS BACK BELT. East City Tower, behind the lead locomotive, closed in July 1972; and the track on the right is the beginning of the NS Bernadotte Branch. Today's train is unusual in that it has a set of transfer units instead of road power. The train has SP GP9R 3435, EMD GP38-2's 830 and 766, and Rio Grande GP40 3066 with 96 cars.

SP S4 1811
Title: SP S4 1811
Description: Southern Pacific S4 1811 was one of two Alco switchers parked outside the railroad's office in Gretna, Louisiana. This unit had been built in 1951 as SP 1483 and it was traded-in to General Electric in 1972. Up until the opening of the Huey P. Long Bridge in December, Gretna had been on the main line of the SUNSET ROUTE, but after that it was just an industrial branch. The tall building in the background was the Jefferson Parish Court House. (approximate day and month)

The small building on the left housed the electronic equipment for a weight-in-motion scale, and the tall signal helped a crew maintain the proper speed while weighing cars.
