Washington-Western 72
Title:  Washington-Western 72
Description:  This 4-6-0 was photographed at the Standard Gravel Co. pit at Clifton, Louisiana. It is Alco-Schenectady 54484, built in January 1914 as New Orleans-Great Northern 72. It was rebuilt with a larger Baldwin boiler (XO-14350) at Bogalusa in 1928, and was subsequently Gulf Mobile & Northern 72, Gulf Mobile & Ohio 72, Gaylord Container 72 and finally Washington-Western 72. After its removal from Clifton, it was cosmetically restored and put on display nearby at the Washington Parish Fairgrounds in Franklinton, Louisiana.

Title:  Washington-Western 5
Description:  This locomotive was a one-of-a kind diesel/torque-converter unit. It was Baldwin/Whitcomb 40754, a 52-ton 400-horsepower variable-gauge RS4TC built in June 1955 as U.S. Army 1281 named GEN. NATHANIEL GREEN I. It became Washington-Western 5 and was eventually scrapped at Clifton.

Description:  This scale test car was built in December 1941 as Whitcomb 13211, a 20-ton 200-horsepower 20GM24. It was originally U.S. Quartermaster Corps 2086 and then U.S. Army 7717, before going to the Washington-Western.

Description:  This VO660 was Baldwin 72828, built in December 1945 as La Salle & Bureau County number 6. It was subsequently Washington-Western (Standard Gravel Co.) 6 and 477, and was sold to Relco of Joliet, Illinois in 1981.

Title:  Washington-Western 476
Description:  This was Alco 77053, an S2 built in March 1950 as Illinois Terminal 709. It was subsequently Illinois Terminal 1010, Washington-Western 1010, and Washington-Western 476. The Illinois Central Gulf branch which served Clifton was abandoned in 1980, and several W-W locomotives were subsequently sold to Relco (Railway Equipment Leasing Co.) of Joliet, Illinois in 1981.

Washington-Western 475
Title:  Washington-Western 475
Description:  Here was Washington-Western Alco S2 475 with 11 ICG hopper cars. The photo was taken on a Saturday, so nothing was running. The locomotive was Alco 75658, built in March 1948 as Texas Pacific-Missouri Pacific Terminal Railroad of New Orleans number 11. It was subsequently renumbered 1057 and was sold to the Washington-Western (Standard Gravel Co.) in February 1967. After operating as WW 1057 it was renumbered 475, and somewhere along the line its cab was modified or replaced. The ICG abandoned the branch line which served Clifton in 1980, and locomotive was sold to Relco at Joliet, Illinois the next year.

Title:  Washington-Western Screening Plant
Description:  One of the fascinating and entertaing aspects of gravel pits was their often-unique machinery. The Clifton screening plant included four hopper cars and a school bus. Not surprisingly, the Green Brothers -- owners of the Standard Gravel Co. and the Washington-Western Railway -- painted almost all of their equipment green!

Description:  This 0-6-0 is Baldwin 39695, built in April 1913 as Texas & New Orleans 124. It was sold to the Washington-Western (Standard Gravel Co.) in 1954 and used at Lacombe, Louisiana. It moved to Jenkins in 1964, to Clifton in 1967, and then to the DeQuincy Railroad Museum.

Description:  This was Alco 69381, an S1 built in November 1940 as Texas Pacific-Missouri Pacific Terminal Railroad of New Orleans number 3. It was subsequently renumbered 6602 and sold to the Washington-Western (Standard Gravel Co.) in December 1966. Standard sodl it to Relco at Joliet, Illinois in 1981.

Description:  This 0-6-0 is Lima 6772, built in March 1924 as Texas & New Orleans 156. It was renumbered T&NO 842 in 1953 and was sold to the Washington-Western (Standard Gravel Co.) in 1956. The WW used it at Jenkins and moved it here to Clifton in 1967, where it once again wore its original number. It went to the Casey Jones Museum in Vaughn, Mississippi March 1984 and then to Terry, Mississippi in May 2005.

Description:  When the Illinois Central Gulf was dismantling the former GM&O Bogue Chitto Branch between Rio, Louisiana and Tylertown, Mississippi the Standard Gravel Co. moved two steam engines from their gravel pit in Clifton to the parish seat of Franklinton. Here are former SP (T&NO) 0-6-0 842 (ex-156) and ex-GM&O/GM&N/NOGN 4-6-0 72 on an industrial siding. The 0-6-0 went to the Casey Jones Museum at Vaughn, Mississippi in 1984 and was subsequently relocated to Terry, Mississippi in 2005; while the 4-6-0 was cosmetically restored and is on display here in Franklinton.

Green Brothers  0-6-0 156
Title:  Green Brothers 0-6-0 156
Description:  This 0-6-0 was built by Lima in March 1924 as Texas & New Orleans 156; and although it had been renumbered 842 in 1953 to clear the 100-series for diesels, its original number was showing on the cab when this photo was taken. The loco had been sold to the Green Brothers in January 1956 for use in the sand and gravel operations on the north side of Lake Pontchartrain, and was last used at Jenkins before being moved and stored at Clifton. The loco is shown here on the north side of Franklinton, as the ICG (former GM&O) branch which had served Clifton was being torn up. It was subsequently placed on display at the Casey Jones Museum in Vaughn, Mississippi in 1984 and then moved to Terry, Mississippi in May 2005.
