Amtrak decided not to exercise its purchase option on these locos, so most of them were returned to Helm via the Illinois Central at New Orleans and sent to the VMV Shops at Paducah, Kentucky. The 661 was delivered to the IC on 27 May 1993. It had been built in December 1968 as Penn Central 3246 and was subsequently CR 3246, B&M 341, AMTK 661, HLCX 661, HLCX 4404 and HCRY (Huron Central) 3802.
ATSF S-LACH-2-24 was a low-priority intermodal train from Los Angeles to Chicago, and here it was at Alliance Avenue in Frellsen – on the western outskirts of New Orleans – in the midst of a leisurely 10-day trip via Dallas and the Kansas City Southern, New Orleans and the Norfolk Southern. At this location, S-LACH-2-24 was utilizing KCS trackage rights over the Illinois Central for the last seven miles of its journey from Dallas to the NS. The train had ATSF SD40-2 5189, SF30C 9523 and SF30C 9546 with 48 cars.
At this time, all of the P40 locos were based out of the diesel shop at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. The CITY’s usual power was two P40 units; but the first pair of locos on this train was heading to Chicago so it could be used on the SUPERLINER CITY INAUGURAL SPECIAL which ran on 1-2 March 1994.
Over several days at the beginning of March 1994, all three of the CITY’s single-level trainsets were replaced with Superliner and ex-ATSF high-level equipment; and to publicize this event, Amtrak ran a special train from Chicago to New Orleans on 1-2 March with the 805, 836 and eight cars. It stopped at all of the regular stops, and there were special events at Champaign-Urbana, Carbondale, Memphis and Jackson. On 3 March, Amtrak hosted a luncheon at NOUPT for invited guests; mostly politicians, travel agents and the media.
In 1990 the car was acquired by Mr. Tigrett’s great nephew, who is also named Isaac B. Tigrett. The younger Mr. Tigrett was a co-founder of the HARD ROCK CAFE and the HOUSE OF BLUES, both of which had venues in New Orleans. When this photo was taken, Mr. Tigrett was spending a lot of time in New Orleans and used this car for entertaining while he was here. At first, he kept the car at NOUPT, but he eventually leased a siding from the NOPB near the French Quarter.
