AMTK GP40 661
Title:  AMTK GP40 661
Description:  AMTK GP40 661 was leaving New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal on train No. 58 – the northbound CITY OF NEW ORLEANS – near the end of its brief career with Amtrak. The locomotive entered revenue service on No. 58 in September 1991 and was now leaving on one of its last trips. It was one of 15 GP40’s (AMTK 650-664) leased from Helm Financial Services in 1991-93 and based out of the diesel shop at NOUPT.

Amtrak decided not to exercise its purchase option on these locos, so most of them were returned to Helm via the Illinois Central at New Orleans and sent to the VMV Shops at Paducah, Kentucky. The 661 was delivered to the IC on 27 May 1993. It had been built in December 1968 as Penn Central 3246 and was subsequently CR 3246, B&M 341, AMTK 661, HLCX 661, HLCX 4404 and HCRY (Huron Central) 3802.

UP 967 Southbound
Title:  UP 967 Southbound
Description:  This Union Pacific local freight train was heading south on the former Texas & Pacific main line between Alexandria, Louisiana and New Orleans, powered by a pair of GP50’s, 967 and 962. The UP found these units well-suited to local service, as their four-wheel trucks gave them the flexibility to get into business tracks and their horsepower enabled them to accelerate quickly and keep up with through trains. These two units were originally Missouri Pacific 3507 and 3502, two of 30 GP50’s on the MP. All were built without dynamic brakes, but the UP had this added to 10 of them (960-969) in 1992-93.

ATSF S-LACH-2-24 on the KCS
Title:  ATSF S-LACH-2-24 on the KCS
Description:  During the massive floods which inundated the midwestern U.S. in the summer of 1993, railroads detoured trains on an unprecedented scale, with the Santa Fe running about two dozen Chicago-California trains via New Orleans between 30 July and 8 August.

ATSF S-LACH-2-24 was a low-priority intermodal train from Los Angeles to Chicago, and here it was at Alliance Avenue in Frellsen – on the western outskirts of New Orleans – in the midst of a leisurely 10-day trip via Dallas and the Kansas City Southern, New Orleans and the Norfolk Southern. At this location, S-LACH-2-24 was utilizing KCS trackage rights over the Illinois Central for the last seven miles of its journey from Dallas to the NS. The train had ATSF SD40-2 5189, SF30C 9523 and SF30C 9546 with 48 cars.

Amtrak Train No. 58
Title:  Amtrak Train No. 58
Description:  Amtrak No. 58 – the northbound CITY OF NEW ORLEANS – was heading across the old Bonnet Carre’ Spillway trestle just north of New Orleans with four new P40 locomotives and a typical 7-car train. No. 58 consisted of locos 805, 836, 801 and 835 with a very eclectic mix of cars: baggage car 1235, Horizon Fleet coaches 54050, 54003, Heritage Fleet dome car 9408 and coach 4637, Amfleet food service car 28003, and Heritage 10-6 sleeper 2449 MAPLE GROVE.

At this time, all of the P40 locos were based out of the diesel shop at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. The CITY’s usual power was two P40 units; but the first pair of locos on this train was heading to Chicago so it could be used on the SUPERLINER CITY INAUGURAL SPECIAL which ran on 1-2 March 1994.

Over several days at the beginning of March 1994, all three of the CITY’s single-level trainsets were replaced with Superliner and ex-ATSF high-level equipment; and to publicize this event, Amtrak ran a special train from Chicago to New Orleans on 1-2 March with the 805, 836 and eight cars. It stopped at all of the regular stops, and there were special events at Champaign-Urbana, Carbondale, Memphis and Jackson. On 3 March, Amtrak hosted a luncheon at NOUPT for invited guests; mostly politicians, travel agents and the media.

GM&O 50 (AMTK 800539)
Title:  GM&O 50 (AMTK 800539)
Description:  Private car GM&O 50 (AMTK 800539) was on the Kansas City Southern-Amtrak interchange just outside of New Orleans, en route from its home on the New Orleans Public Belt to New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal via the KCS, and it left on the westbound SUNSET two days later. It was subsequently owned by the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio and the Illinois Central Gulf before going into private ownership.

In 1990 the car was acquired by Mr. Tigrett’s great nephew, who is also named Isaac B. Tigrett. The younger Mr. Tigrett was a co-founder of the HARD ROCK CAFE and the HOUSE OF BLUES, both of which had venues in New Orleans. When this photo was taken, Mr. Tigrett was spending a lot of time in New Orleans and used this car for entertaining while he was here. At first, he kept the car at NOUPT, but he eventually leased a siding from the NOPB near the French Quarter.
