L&N cab |
| Description: |
On the Sunday before Christmas 1964 Louisville & Nashville EXTRA 661 SOUTH was entering the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal EASTERN CONNECTION at East City Junction. For many years the L&N operated southbound CNX - and northbound NCX - mail and express extras between Cincinnati and New Orleans during the Christmas Season. These trains were typically 15-20 cars long and ran with a caboose. The tracks on the left belonged to the Southern Railways New Orleans Terminal Co., and that was East City Tower on the extreme left. The train was four miles from its destination at NOUPT, and the photo was taken with a plastic Kodak STARMETER camera. |

| Description: |
Amtrak 11-double-bedroom car 2230 AVON PARK was on Train 59 – the southbound PANAMA LIMITED – as it was backing in to New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal on 28 December 1973. All-bedroom cars were not common on Nos. 58/59, but this one was supplementing a 10-roomette/6-double-bedroom car for the Holiday Season. It had been completed by Pullman-Standard on 7 January 1956 as Seaboard Air Line 74, one of six Plan 4201 cars. All were placed in service in December 1955 and January 1956, making these some of the last sleeping cars built before the advent of Amtrak in 1971. It was renumbered Seaboard Coast Line 6100, then Amtrak 2230, was retired in 1976 and sold to Ampol Wrecking in Indianapolis. |

Westbound SP on Huey P. Long Bridge |
| Description: |
Ten Southern Pacific locomotives were hauling a westbound train up the Huey P. Long Bridge, on its way to the railroad’s AVONDALE YARD at the west end of the bridge. The first five units (SP SD45R 7546 SD45 8978, SD45R 7517, SD45R 7550, SD40T-2 8321) had just delivered a stack train to the Norfolk Southern while the second five (GP30 5009, GP35 6653, GP20R 4102, GP9 3877 and 3816) were a set of transfer units on a train from the CSX. The two sets of power were combined at the east end of the bridge, so the SP crew on the road power could bring the transfer run back to Avondale after the CSX crew delivered it. |
