Under a magnificent plume of coal smoke, Louisville & Nashville K-5 class Pacific 282 was powering southbound train Number 7 - the local from Mobile - across the New Orleans Terminal Co. crossings at N.O.T. Tower (hidden by the smoke) and over the Marigny Canal. No. 7 was about 2½ miles away from the end of its run at the railroad's Canal Street Station. The 282 had been built by Alco-Brooks in 1924 and was retired on 8 January 1953. (approximate date of photo) |

Description: |
It's almost 5:15 p.m. and Louisville & Nashville K4 Pacific 233 is ready to pull out of the train shed at the railroad’s Canal Street Station with No. 12 - the commuter train to Ocean Springs, Mississippi. The 233 was built at the L&N's South Louisville Shops in 1915 and retired on 16 October 1951. The train was officially dieselized - with FP7A's - on 27 July 1951 and all L&N passenger trains moved to New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal on 16 April 1954. Nos. 9 and 12 made their last run on 6 May 1964. (approximate date) |
