RE S2 1049 |
Description: |
Railway Equipment Leasing Co. S2 1049 was parked on a siding along the Illinois Central Gulf in the Baton Rouge area, without a front coupler or some steps. Relco units were very common along the ICG between here and New Orleans because of the many industries along the Mississippi. The locomotive was built in June 1948 as Seaboard Air Line 1432 before becoming Seaboard Coast Line 48, and it had been retired in August 1976. |

SP SD40T-2 8548 |
Description: |
Southern Pacific SD40T-2 8548 had been built in January 1979, and most of it was still shiney enough to reflect the afternoon sun as it was leaving Avondale Yard on a westbound train. The locomotive was assigned Union Pacific number 8658, but this was not applied before it was retired on 6 August 2002. It was subsequently GE Credit (GECX) 8548 and then Helm (HLCX) 6140. |

NOPSI Cars |
Description: |
New Orleans Public Service Inc. cars were gathered at the foot of Canal Street, near the Mississippi River, awaiting their turn to depart. TULANE line car 410 was one of 50 cars built by the Southern Car Co. in 1915 for a predecessor of NOPSI. It had a CAR HOUSE sign up, and would be retired the next year; while CEMETERIES car 873 was built by Brill in 1922. Notice the clever "194-7UP" ad on the 410, while car 873 was promoting rival Royal Crown Cola. |
