L&N Crane 40024
The L&N's MOBILE WRECKER had just arrived in New Orleans to help rerail SP GP35's 6599 and 6669, along with L&N hopper car 184876. The derailed equipment had been on an L&N-SP run-through train, and the accident took place at the west (railroad south) end of the Franklin Avenue underpass. The crane was L&N 40024, a 200-ton Orton built in January 1968. It spent its entire life based in Mobile, and was retired by the CSX as SBD 740024 in October 1992. The equipment on the other side of the crane was boom car 41915, baggage car 41032, coach 42345, and GP30 1013.
