SP No. 1
The high, midday summer sun made for poor lighting, but that didn't stop Joe Wilhelm from shooting the westbound SUNSET in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. Train No. 1 was on track 12, awaiting its 12:01 PM departure, with E9A 6046, E7B 5909 and six cars: an unidentified deadhead, a baggage car, three coaches, and an AUTOMAT food service car. The 6046 was the first of the Espee's nine E9A units and was traded-in to EMD in February 1970, while the 5909 was the last of the railroad's 10 E7B's and was sent back to EMD in October 1968. A year after this photo, tracks 7-12 would be shortened by about 600 feet so that a bus parking area could be built here, and then scenes like this would no longer be possible. (approximate day)
