There was only one place where Southern Pacific Alco’s mingled with Gulf Mobile & Ohio geeps – the GM&O’s CANAL YARD in New Orleans. In this view, SP RSD12/DL702 2962 was with a pair of siblings on a transfer run from their AVONDALE YARD, while GM&O GP35 604 was one of three geeps that had come in on train No. 33 and – after some switching – they would return north on No. 32. Both of these locomotives rode on the trucks of old Alcos, those under the 2962 came from an RSD5 and those under the 604 from an FA1. Scenes like this disappeared the day of the IC-GM&O merger, less than a year away. (approximate date of photo) |
