Louisville & Nashville E7A 798 was at the engine service area in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. This locomotive had been built on 9 May 1946 as Chicago & Eastern Illinois 1100, became Missouri Pacific 27 in 1968 and then L&N 798 in June 1969. A stencil on the other side of the unit showed that it had been painted at Mobile on 3 April 1970. The 798 stood out because it retained its original small number boxes, while all of the L&N’s other E7A units had large number boxes. It was retired in November 1971 and used as trade-in credit with EMD. (approximate date of photo) |
