U.S. Steel GENEVA WORKS 36, 37 and 80
United States Steel’s Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton S12 units 36 (76136) and 37 (76137) – along with slug 80 – were working in the GENEVA WORKS at Geneva, Utah. These S12’s had been built in July 1956 as Rayonier, Inc. 201 and 202 and were some of the last locomotives built by BLH. They were purchased by U.S. Steel in December 1973, less than two years before this photo was taken, which explained their fresh paint and clean appearance. These were Geneva’s second locomotives to wear these numbers, as the first were Baldwin VO1000 units which had been built for the Defense Plant Corp. in 1943 as Carbon County Railway (CBC) 262.1 and 262.2. These went to Geneva in 1958, were retired in 1973 and were rebuilt into slugs 81 and 80.
