GM&O GP38-2 742
After the IC-GM&O merger on 10 August 1972 the regular operation of ICG trains over the Southern Railway between Slidell and Oliver Junction in New Orleans ended, but extra trains continued to run occasionally as Southern No. 835. These trains delivered carloads of fabricated reinforcing bars from one of Laclede Steels’ two mills in the St. Louis area to its fabricating plant in New Orleans, which was located at the south end of the former GM&O CANAL YARD. The steel was being used for the construction of the LOUISIANA SUPERDOME. Here is Gulf, Mobile & Ohio GP38-2 742 with one MKT gondola and GM&O 2993 at Slidell, Louisiana.
