KCS GP40-3 2811
The late-afternoon winter sun was illuminating Kansas City Southern GP40-3 2811 as it was leaving the railroad’s WEST YARD just outside of New Orleans with a transfer run for the New Orleans Public Belt’s COTTON WAREHOUSE YARD. The locomotive had been built in June 1966 as Western Pacific GP40 3507 and was renumbered Union Pacific 656 in May 1984. It was retired in April 1993, was upgraded by Morrison-Knudsen into KCS GP40-3 4770 that November, and was subsequently renumbered 2811. The former New York Central lounge car on the right was privately owned.
