MP Train HNS |
Description: |
Missouri Pacific train HNS -- en route from Houston to the Southern Railway in New Orleans and then on to Birmingham as train 114 -- passes the MP's 'Four Deuces' at the south end of the Addis Yard. The train's motive power is really unusual, a pair of the Southern's six GP49's: 4603T and 4605H. These units were normally used in trios, so something must have happened to one of the train's locomotives. |

Missouri Pacific 2242 was originally Rock Island 4308, and some traces of its original blue color were bleeding through the MP paint. The geep was tied up at the yard in Alexandria, Louisiana. |

MP Trains |
Description: |
This photo is a bit fuzzy because it was made from a small section of a telephoto shot. It shows a pair of eastbound Missouri Pacific trains that were parked just west of the railroad's Avondale Yard, waiting to get in. On the left was Southern run-through train HNS (Houston-New Orleans to the Southern) with SD40-2 3239, SD45 3161 and SD40 3183; while next to it was an unidentified train with GP38-2 2251, U23B 4505 and GP38-2 2292. The next year the MP would merge with the UP and the Southern would merge with the Norfolk & Western, so scenes like this would soon disappear. |

The little train is on its way from"the fair site to the railroad's Avondale Yard.% Instead of using the UP's wye at Westwego, the 8444 was brought to the SP's Avondale Yard where the locomotive and tender were'separated and turned individually on the turntable there! Description: |
KCS GP38-2's 4009 and 4001 power southbound train across the Red River Bridge into Alexandria. The train had 43 cars and no caboose. The bridge, which included a swing span, was built by the American Bridge Co. in 1901 for the Louisiana Railway & Navigation Co. The Kansas City Southern stopped using it in late January 1996, upon completion of a new high-level fixed bridge six miles south of here at Latanier; and it was dismantled in early April 1996. |

L&N Geeps |
Description: |
On Sunday afternoon 9 May 1976 Louisville & Nashville GP38-2 units 4114 and 4052 were arriving in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, and that night they would depart for Mobile with the AMERICAN FREEDOM TRAIN. The AFT had come in to New Orleans a week earlier over the Illinois Central Gulf behind former Southern Pacific 4-8-4 4449; but the L&N would not let the big engine operate over its line along the Gulf Coast, so the train departed behind these geeps while the 4449 headed back north over the ICG, with just its tool car. |

Description: |
We're on the Southern Railway BACK BELT at Frenchman Street where the brakeman on SP train AXAVT had just "pulled the pin" and was signaling for his engineer to pull ahead. The AXAVT was one of the country's earliest dedicated stack trains; and when this photo was taken, it was one of the few then in operation. It ran from the Port of Long Beach to New Orleans, and handled American President Line containers exclusively, mostly on blue APLX cars. In this view, the cars were being delivered to the Southern Railway for delivery to their destination in Atlanta as a part of train No. 222. The locomotives were GP38-2 4802, GP35 6593, GP38-2 4830 and GP35M 4160. |

Southern Transfer Run |
Description: |
Southern Railway GP38-2 5156 and GP38 2796 were on a westbound transfer run across New Orleans to the Kansas City Southern. The train was stopped on the New Orleans Terminal Co. at Canal Boulevard. The No. 20 switches under and next to the train were the East City crossovers, and the signal bridge was the east limit of East City Junction. Notice the environmentally-friendly flange lubricator on the eastbound track! |

SCL 1740, SBD 2719, and SBD 6028 |
Description: |
Seaboard System New Orleans-Birmingham train No. 470 crosses the Rigolets Drawbridge, 26 miles east of Gentilly Yard in New Orleans. The Rigolets is a pass which connects Lake Pontchartrain -- off to the right -- with the Gulf of Mexico on the left, and the New Orleans city limit is on the far shore. The slide was taken through the windshield of a helicopter, which explains the poor quality of the image. |

CN/IC Dock Job |
Description: |
IC GP38-2 9563 leads the southbound CN/IC DOCK JOB over the New Orleans Public Belt near Audubon Park. (The fifth and six cars are crossing Walnut Street.) This transfer run is on its way from the Mays Yard to Stuyvesant Docks Yard, but most of its cars will be delivered to the New Orleans Public Belt at Cotton Warehouse Yard. After the end of steam operation this job was usually handled by one or two switch engines, but geeps took over in August 1999 as the CN/IC phased out its fleet of SW14's. In April of 2003, just 15 months later, the CN/IC moved its intermodal facility from Stuyvesant Docks to Mays Yard; and at about the same time, the CN/IC-NOPB interchange was moved to Mays Yard so scenes like this disappeared forever. The photo was taken from the Mississippi River levee. |

IC DOCK JOB |
Description: |
Illinois Central GP38-2 9628, originally the ICG GRENVILLE M. DODGE, was on the DOCK JOB bringing cars from the railroad’s MAYS YARD to STUYVESANT DOCKS YARD and the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad. The shot was taken at Dakin Avenue, near the line between Orleans and Jefferson parishes. The Norfolk Southern piggyback car behind the locomotive was rebuilt from a boxcar, while the track in the foreground was once the Kansas City Southern’s connection with the NOPB. |
