Southern Railway Train No. 47
Title:  Southern Railway Train No. 47
Description:  Southern Railway train No. 47 – the southbound SOUTHERNER– had just backed into New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal behind FP7 6147 and an unidentified E8A. (Its scheduled arrival time was 7:10 PM.) Here, a carman had uncoupled the locomotives and was signaling the engineer with his lantern that he could pull ahead. The engine crew would then bring the power out to the engine terminal, where they would go off duty. When this photo was taken, the SOUTHERNER was frequently powered by an FP7 and an E8; but for most of its 29-year existence, the train ran with one or two E-units. (approximate date of photo)

Kansas City Southern Train No. 2
Title:  Kansas City Southern Train No. 2
Description:  Kansas City Southern train No. 2 – the northbound SOUTHERN BELLE – was sitting on Track 3 in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, awaiting its 9:30 PM departure. No. 2 consisted of E9Am 23, a baggage car, a coach and a lunch counter-lounge observation car. In December 1967 the railroad sought permission from the Interstate Commerce Commission to discontinue all passenger service, but the ICC issued four extension orders for Nos. 1 and 2 totaling 18 months. After May 1968, Nos. 1 and 2 were the only passenger trains left on the KCS, and the railroad was waiting for ICC approval to discontinue them. No. 2 finally left New Orleans for the last time on 2 November 1969. (approximate date of photo)

Kansas City Southern Train No. 2
Title:  Kansas City Southern Train No. 2
Description:  This was the observation car on Kansas City Southern train No. 2 – the northbound SOUTHERN BELLE – at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, as the train awaited its 9:30 PM departure time. The car was one of four buffet-lounges built by Budd in February 1948 as New York Central 48-51. They were purchased by the KCS in 1960 and renumbered 44-47, then remodeled into lunch counter-lounge cars 43, 41, 40 and 42 in 1963. All were retired and sold in 1970.

L&N No. 8 and SOU No. 47
Title:  L&N No. 8 and SOU No. 47
Description:  Southern Railway No. 47 – the SOUTHERNER from New York City – was sitting in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal next to Louisville & Nashville train No. 8 – the combined PAN-AMERICAN for Cincinnati and the GULF WIND for Jacksonville. The SOUTHERNER was due in at 7:10 PM while the L&N train was scheduled to leave at 8:45, so No. 47 must have arrived a little late this evening. Notice the altered lights on L&N 791. E6A 771 was the only other L&N E-unit like this, although E6A 756 and E7A 761 had their lower light changed. (approximate date of photo)

L&N Train No. 9
Title:  L&N Train No. 9
Description:  Louisville & Nashville train No. 9 - the combined PAN AMERICAN from Cincinnati and GULF WIND from Jacksonville - was nicely-illuminated by the morning sun as it made its stop at Carrollton Avenue Station in New Orleans, about three miles and 10 minutes away from its destination at Union Passenger Terminal. Today's train consisted of E7A 780 and FP7 695 with 12 cars. No. 9 was running about 20 minutes late, so this rare image would been taken around 8:05.

After No. 9 arrived the next morning, the L&N discontinued operations along the Mississippi Gulf Coast in preparation for HURRICANE CAMILLE, which made landfall that night. The storm damaged 23 miles of track, together with signals and communication along 37 miles of the line. Full freight operation did not resume until 8 September, and passenger service began shortly after that. The tracks in the foreground were remnants of a Kansas City Southern yard.

Southern Railway Train No. 2
Title:  Southern Railway Train No. 2
Description:  Southern Railway train No. 2 – the northbound SOUTHERN CRESCENT – was in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal awaiting its 7:00 AM departure with a trio of freshly-repainted E8A locomotives. Lead unit 2929 was unusual because it had received the new green paint scheme while retaining its original 2900-series road number. Most of the seven 2900-series E8’s received new 6900-series numbers when they were repainted green in 1972. Notice that the trucks and underbody tanks had not been repainted on any of the locos! (approximate date of photo)
