L&NW FP7A 49
Title:  L&NW FP7A 49
Description:  This sharp-looking FP7 was built in January 1950 as Western Pacific 805A. After 20 years of hauling the CALIFORNIA ZEPHYR between Salt Lake City and Oakland, WP traded it in to GE in August 1972. GE sold it to the Wellsville, Addison & Galeton the next month, but it never received a WAG number. It moved to the Louisiana & North West in 1976 and was photographed early the next year sitting outside the railroad's Gibsland engine house in very fresh L&NW paint. It was sold to the Portola Railroad Museum in July 1986 and restored as WP 805A.

Crescent and Daylight
Title:  Crescent and Daylight
Description:  For many years its was Amtrak's practice to add cars to the northbound CRESCENT and removed them from the southbound train at Atlanta, resulting in a much smaller consist at New Orleans. This was a continuation of the Southern Railway's procedure with the SOUTHERN CRESCENT. During the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition, Amtrak ran almost all of the train -- except for the extra mail cars -- all the way into New Orleans to accomodate fair goers. While attendence at the Fair fell well below the projected estimate, and train ridership never met expextations; during this time the CRESCENT was a very impressive train!

It's 6:45 P.M. at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal and the early evening sun was reflecting off of the nose of F40 260 as it and the 262 had just backed in on track 5 with a 17-car train. The train's consist was baggage car 1172 SILVER TREASURE, baggage-dormitory car 1624, coaches 4733, 4737, 4637, 4711, 4639, and 4018, Amfleet lounge 28020, diner 8519, 10-6 sleepers 2436 PACIFIC CREST, 2438 PACIFIC CASTLE and un-named 2903, un-named 11-double-bedroom car 2233, lounge 3109, and coaches 4716 and 4702.

Across the platform on track 6 is the WORLD'S FAIR DAYLIGHT, which would depart for Oregon the next morning. The DAYLIGHT had GS-4 4-8-4 4449, water car PNWC 4219, combine PNWC 3300 MILN D. GILLESPIE, sleeper-lounge PNWC 600 MT. HOOD, coaches SW 542 SONOMA, SW 544 MENDOCINO, SW 546 HUMBOLDT, SW 507 SHASTA, SW 511 STANISLAUS, PAR 2397, SW 500 SAN JOAQUIN, SW 518 TUOLUMNE, and GW 598 RED RIVER, diner SW 156 LAKE PEPIN and observation-lounge GS 1290 APPEKUNNY MOUNTAIN. (GW was Great Western Tours, GS was Grant Supply, PAR was Pacific Railroad Society, PNWC was Pacific Northwest Chapter-NRHS, and SW was Sierra Western.)

The DAYLIGHT had arrived in New Orleans the previous Saturday, and SP 4449 had spent the week parked outside the Fair site. UP 4-8-4 8444 was on display inside the Fair, so for a week there were two big Northern's at the Fair. That's the photographer's Volkswagen RABBIT on the left.

Super Bowl XX
Title:  Super Bowl XX
Description:  It's the Sunday of Super Bowl XX at the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal engine house, and a couple of visitors are brightening up the landscape! Southern Pacific SDP45's 3201 and 3207 had arrived the previous day on a 15-car Super Bowl Special. On the same track are P30CH 708 and a sibling, next to them are F40's 262 and 264, and two tracks over are P30's 716 and 706 with F40's 328 and 323. Even more units, including an Amtrak E9A, SDP40F and two Seaboard System F-units, were behind the photographer.

Title:  L&D 1501
Description:  Louisiana & Delta CF7 1501 -- the CITY OF NEW IBERIA -- rests amid the lush vegetation at Avery Island, on the end of the railroad's Salt Mine Branch. ICG GP10 8114, SD20 2024 and GP40 3031 are heading away from us, going to Mays Yard after delivering intermodal train No. 55 to the railroad's IMX (InterModal eXchange) at Nashville Ave. and the Mississippi River. Espee 4449 is sitting on the New Orleans Public Belt westbound main track, after having spent a week on display at the 1984 Louisiana World's Fair. Earlier this morning an NOPB switch engine had moved it from the fair site to here, and it is waiting for an ICG switch engine to accompany it to New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. The Daylight and its matched set of cars left for home in Portland, Oregon the next morning. Daylight engineer Doyle McCormack has placed the number "5" in the locomotive's train numbers boxes. Bump
Title:  Bump
Description:  On a foggy morning in October low-nose SP GP9 3712 pushes the ICG's New Orleans wreck train into the West High Curve of the Huey P. Long Bridge. Just beyond the wrecker, and on the opposite track, is SP GP9E 3387 and - sticking up in the air - SP caboose 1274. The 1274 was on the rear of a westbound train that was stuck on the bridge behind an MP train. For some reason, the MP could not take their train into their yard; so the SP decided to send some engines over from the east side of the river and pull their train back off of the bridge. Anyhow, it was a dark and foggy night, and SP 3387 coupled into the 1274 just a little too hard, causing it to jack-knief like this; and now the ICG wrecker has come to make things right!

Description:  It was a couple of years after the 1982 MP-WP-UP merger before Union Pacific and Western Pacific locomotives became common on the Missouri Pacific around New Orleans, so it was a real treat to find units from all three roads outside the diesel shop at Avondale yard. From left to right are WP GP40 3531 (with UP SD45 No. 21), UP SD40-2 3785, and MP GP38-2's 2166 and 2205.

SCL 1740, SBD 2719, and SBD 6028
Title:  SCL 1740, SBD 2719, and SBD 6028
Description:  Seaboard System New Orleans-Birmingham train No. 470 crosses the Rigolets Drawbridge, 26 miles east of Gentilly Yard in New Orleans. The Rigolets is a pass which connects Lake Pontchartrain -- off to the right -- with the Gulf of Mexico on the left, and the New Orleans city limit is on the far shore. The slide was taken through the windshield of a helicopter, which explains the poor quality of the image.

The track in the foreground, parallel to the train, belongs to the ICG.

Grain Train
Title:  Grain Train
Description:  An interesting assortment of locomotives lead a southbound grain train across Pass Manchac, about 40 miles north of New Orleans. When this photo was taken, grain trains usually ran with a caboose on each end, as the power had to run around the train in Kenner before heading up the former Y&MV line to the elevators along the Mississippi River.

SP FP7A 6454
Title:  SP FP7A 6454
Description:  Amtrak's westbound SUNSET was about five minutes out of New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal, as viewed from the Jefferson Davis Parkway overpass. The train consisted of SP FP7A's 6454 and 6457, F7B 8290, and FP7A 6447 with 14 cars: baggage car 1002, low-level coaches 5231, 4447 and ATSF 2826; high-level coaches 9910, 9932, 9943 and 9901; diner 8035, dormitory-lounge 3390, diner SP 10211, 11-bedroom sleeper STAR CREST, 16-4 SCL ORIOLE and transcontinental 10-6 2759 PALM SUMMIT. The SP F-units always smoked like this when they first left the station, after being parked all night. That's the Louisiana SUPERDOME under construction in the background.
