Title:  L&N 2-8-2 1518
Description:  Louisville & Nashville class J-3 2-8-2 1518 and an auxiliary water car were photographed next to the turntable at the railroad’s Julia Street Yard in New Orleans This photo was taken on 28 August 1951, near the end of L&N steam operations into the Crescent City. The class J-3 was the standard USRA Light Mikado and, at 292,000 pounds, were the heaviest steam locomotives used on the line between Mobile and New Orleans. The 1518 had been built by Alco in 1920 and was retired on 29 January 1952.

Description:  In the early 1950’s the Louisville & Nashville’s shop in Mobile accented the trucks on passenger units with aluminum paint. As an example, here was recently-repainted E6A 775 on train 34, the northbound PIEDMONT, at the New Orleans station. The locomotive had been built as the 455B in June 1945, was renumbered in 1946 and was retired in July 1967.

Title:  IC SW9 9333
Description:  Multiple-unit equipped Illinois Central SW9 9333 was photographed at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal while construction was still going on. On the other side of the locomotive is the NOUPT Railway Express Agency building, which was completed in 1950. NOUPT had just been placed in partial operation -- for IC, MP (GCL) and SP trains -- and it was placed in full operation on 16 April 1954. The 9333 was renumbered 1233 in September 1957 and rebuilt into SW14 1437 in September 1980.

Title:  NOUPT SW8 2
Description:  New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal SW8 units 1-3 were built at EMD’s Cleveland Plant in December 1953 and were used by the Southern Pacific until the new station was placed in full operation in April 1954. Here is NOUPT 2 at the Espee’s AVONDALE YARD, just west of New Orleans, with T&NO caboose 517. Notice the orange wing design on the unit’s nose. These disappeared as the locos were repainted. NOUPT 1 and 3 remained at the terminal until 1990, but number 2 was sold to Jones & Laughlin Steel around 1960.

Description:  On 18 April 1954 Illinois Central SW1 615 was photographed next to the sand tower at Mays Yard, just west of New Orleans, coupled to SW7 9415. The SW1 had been built in June 1946 as the 9030 and it was renumbered 615 in October 1953 – just six months before this photo was taken – so its original number could be reused on a new GP9. The 9415 was renumbered 415 in December 1959 so its original number could be reused on a new GP18.

Title:  L&N Train No. 34
Description:  The day after New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal was dedicated, Louisville & Nashville FP7 651 and GP7 550 were on their way out of the station with train No. 34, the combined PIEDMONT for New York City and the GULF WIND for Jacksonville. The train’s first two coaches were Seaboard Air Line cars going to Florida, while the Jacksonville sleepers were on the rear. The GULF WIND cars would be removed at Flomaton, Alabama and continued on to Jacksonville as train No. 61.

The unit had been built in June 1951 as the 652, it was renumbered 694 in 1966 and was retired on 17 January 1969.

Description:  Louisiana Eastern 4-4-0 number 1 was with caboose 550 and former Cavalcade of Amusements circus car ERNESTINE ROSE. The locomotive was built by Baldwin in 1919 as Red River & Gulf 104 and was purchased by the LERR in 1950. It was sold to the Stone Mountain Scenic Railroad in 1960 where it was named GENERAL II, and went to the Southeastern Railroad Museum at Duluth, Georgia in 2008.

Title:  SP (T&NO) 2-6-0 463
Description:  Southern Pacific 2-6-0 463 (second) was working at AVONDALE YARD, just west of New Orleans, coupled to a Harriman Common Standard passenger car. The Mogul had been built by Baldwin in 1912 as the 503, in the 500-514 group. It was rebuilt at the Algiers Shops in New Orleans in 1931, renumbered 688 (second) in 1949 and then 463 (second) in 1950. This loco was a real survivor, outlasting all of its siblings and most of the other steam locomotives on the T&NO. It was finally sold for scrap on 7 January 1957.

Description:  Alco’s Brooks Works (63072) Baldwin (52207) Louisiana Eastern 2-8-2 number 14 and 4-4-0 number 1 were parked next to each other at Shiloh, Louisiana. The 14 was originally Mississippi Central 120, built by Alco’s Brooks Works (63072) in July 1921. It was acquired by the LERR in 1953 and was scrapped at Shiloh in November 1962. The 1 was originally Red River & Gulf 104, built by Baldwin (52207) in August 1919. Paulsen Spence bought it in 1946 for his Comite Southern Railroad, then it became LERR 1 in 1950, and it was sold to the Stone Mountain Scenic Railway in 1961.

Description:  Louisville & Nashville dual-service GP7 509 was parked at GENTILLY YARD in New Orleans, coupled to FP7 656. The pair had come in on local No. 75 and returned to Mobile on fast freight No. 72. The 509 had been built in February 1953 and was wearing aluminum trucks, something the paint shop at Mobile was adding to dual-service units around this time. The 509 was renumbered 441 in 1965 and then 2333 around 1980, before becoming Seaboard System 2333.

Fluker is along the main line of the IC at milepost 837.0, about 10 miles south of the Mississippi state line. The locomotive had been built by Alco’s Schenectady Works as serial number 54755 in June 1914 and was sold to Watson in July 1952.

Description:  Former Illinois Central 4-6-2 2037 was on the Louisiana Eastern at Shiloh, Louisiana shortly after it was sold to the LERR in August 1957. The locomotive was built by Alco’s Schenectady Works (43467) in September 1907 as IC 1045, with 75½-inch drivers for mainline passenger service; and it was one of 68 Pacifics rebuilt by the railroad between July 1941 and May 1943 with 61-inch drivers (as the 2030-2097 series) for light freight service.
