New Orleans Public Service streetcar 811 was outbound on the TULANE BELT on Loyola Street (now South Saratoga Street) at Cleveland Avenue. TULANE cars operated on Loyola Street for two blocks, from Canal Street to Tulane Avenue, until they were replaced by trolleybuses on 8 January 1951. The large building behind the car was a part of the former Elks Lodge at 127 Elks Place, and originally contained an auditorium and a swimming pool; while the building on the very left was the Krauss Department Store at 1201 Canal Street. Two New Orleans Public Service vehicles were stopped on Willow Street at South Carrollton Avenue. LEONIDAS bus 1746 was a White Motor Co. MODEL 788 built in 1948 and was making a regular stop, while TULANE car 868 was on its way from the Carrollton Car Barn to South Carrollton Avenue. It had been built by the J.G. Brill Co. in 1922 and was scrapped in May 1952. Up until 6 December 1923 Willow Street had been named Poplar, which is why the theater on the left has that name. (unknown date of photo) |

The car had just turned left from Tulane Avenue onto South Liberty Street, and in two blocks it would turn right onto Canal Street. The bunting with the trophy on the corner building showed that it might have been SUGAR BOWL season! Much of the area in this photo is unrecognizable today; but the tall building in the background – the JUNG HOTEL at 1500 Canal Street – is still there. Car 812 had been built by the J.G. The was the end of the line from 8 January 1951, when the ST. CHARLES / TULANE belt line was discontinued, until 10 August 1952, when it was relocated down South Carrollton to South Claiborne. JIM’S PLACE, a restaurant and bar known for its fried chicken, was right across the street at 3832 South Carrollton. The 801 had been built by Brill in 1922 and was scrapped in April 1953.
