ICG, NOPB and NOS&WB
Title:  ICG, NOPB and NOS&WB
Description:  This was a view looking north on the Illinois Central Gulf along the Mississippi River in New Orleans. The two tracks on the left belonged to the New Orleans Public Belt, while the track on the right belonged to the New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board and could be reached by both the NOPB (in the foreground) and the ICG. At the time of this photo, part of the NOS&WB interchange was being reconstructed. The street on the right was Leake Avenue, while the grade crossing was at Oak Street.

ASYX 4583
Title:  ASYX 4583
Description:  It wasn't too hard to figure out the previous identity of Avondale Shipyard Inc. NW2 4583. The NW2 was serial No. 5834, built in November 1948 as Southern Railway 2273. It was later renumbered 1064 -- which was still in the number boards on the headlight casing -- and it was one of two Southern NW2's sold to Avondale in 1980. That's the Huey P. Long Bridge on the right.

Bisso Towboat 2
Title:  Bisso Towboat 2
Description:  This was the former Texas Pacific-Missouri Pacific Terminal Railroad of New Orleans 0-6-0 number 2 shortly after it had been repainted by the Bisso Towboat Co. Bisso had owned the locomotive for over 30 years, and finally decided to fix it up. The yellow stripe on the stack was a trademark of Bisso tugboats. The locomotive was built by Alco's Richmond Works (serial No. 42929) in June 1907 as Trinity & Brazos Valley 76, and was later TPMPTRRofNO number 2.

Yards
Title:  Yards
Description:  In this northwestward view of the Southern Pacific and Missouri Pacific yards at Avondale, Louisiana the SP's turntable and little roundhouse were in the foreground, with two sets of road power on the right and a quartet of transfer geeps on the left. The MoP's diesel shop was in the upper left, and the Mississippi River flowed from left to right across the top of the image on its way to the Gulf. The roundhouse and diesel shop are long gone, as are the SP and the MoP!

MP 4641
Title:  MP 4641
Description:  A trio of MoPac GE's -- B23-7 4641, U23B 4534 and B23-7 4644 -- power a westbound transfer run over the New Orleans Public Belt at the Uptown Square Shopping Center. About eight cars back are the two cabooses of ICG intermodal train No. 53, near the end of its trip from Chicago. The paved over crossing in Leake Avenue is a reminder that the shopping center was built on land once occupied by an industry that was served by rail. For over 70 years the U. S. Industrial Alcohol Co. had a plant here which distilled molasses into alcohol.

Corps of Engineers
Title:  Corps of Engineers
Description:  For many years the New Orleans District of the Army Corps of Engineers has had a base of operations along the Mississippi River near AUDUBON PARK. Prior to the modernization of this installation, which began in 1984, there were some railroad tracks here which connected with the New Orleans Public Belt at GOVERNMENT SWITCH. These tracks were occasionally used to bring in pilings and other supplies, but all of these tracks were removed or paved over when almost all of the old structures were replaced. Photographer unknown. (approximate date of photo)

KCS Transfer Run
Title:  KCS Transfer Run
Description:  In a really unusual move, KCS F3A 4051 and F9Am 4061 were powering an 80-car transfer run along the New Orleans Public Belt near South Carrollton Avenue. The train was on its way from the KCS's West Yard to the NOPB's Cotton Warehouse Yard with 17 box cars, 63 loaded C&NW hopper cars, and caboose 347. The two MP box cars were on their way home (via the NOPB); while the other box cars had drilling mud for Dresser Industries, along the Industrial Canal. These transfer runs typically ran with a switch engine, 10-20 cars, and no caboose.

Deckbar Avenue Overpass
Title:  Deckbar Avenue Overpass
Description:  This view was facing west from the Deckbar Avenue overpass in suburban New Orleans, just west of SOUTHPORT JUNCTION. The two tracks on the extreme left belonged to the New Orleans Public Belt, and were built in the early 1930's as a part of the HUEY P. LONG BRIDGE project. The Missouri Pacific train in the distance was waiting to get through EAST BRIDGE JUNCTION and on to the Bridge. The single track on the left belonged to the Illinois Central Gulf. A track was first built on this alignment around 1880 by the New Orleans & Mississippi Valley, a predecessor of the Yazoo & Mississippi Valley, and for many years this had been used by the IC as its inbound main line into New Orleans. It has been inentified as the A2 track. Next was the ICG LONG CROSSOVER, used by trains moving to and from the ICG's line along the Mississippi River in New Orleans. And finally, the track on the left was the ICG's main line out of New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. A track was first built on this right-of-way by the New Orleans, Jackson & Great Northern around 1853. The switch on the main line across from the LONG CROSSOVER served a 2-track yard associated with the warehouse on the right. Between 1954 and 1969 the inbound and outbound tracks were used by IC, MP, SP and T&P passenger trains, but in 1969 the few trains began using the former outbound track in both directions.

SP MP15AC 2710
Title:  SP MP15AC 2710
Description:  Southern Pacific MP15AC 2710 -along with the 2704 - and Cotton Belt caboose 60 were in the New Orleans Public Belt's COTTON WAREHOUSE YARD. They had just arrived with a transfer run from the Espee's AVONDALE YARD on the west side of the Mississippi River, and were preparing to return with a westbound train. All of those orange box cars and intermodal cars were unwanted NOPB incentive per diem cars. In this view, the river is just off to the right, and the water tower on the right of SP 2710 was in the Illinois Central Gulf's STUYVESANT DOCKS YARD. The silos on the right were a part of the port's Public Grain Elevator, which was right along the Mississippi.

Railbus
Title:  Railbus
Description:  BRE-Leyland Railbus RB004 rests between runs at the Kenner Depot. BRE was British Rail Engineering Ltd., formerly the Workshops Division of British Railways; while Leyland was a long-established manufacturer of busses and trucks. They built this Railbus in Workington, England in 1984 and it spent about two years on a demonstration tour in the USA, including a few weeks running between Kenner and New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal over the ICG. To accomodate passengers, the City of Kenner built this attractive shelter next to an existing ICG siding on the west (railroad north) side of Williams Boulevard.

Title:  UP SD40-2 3251
Description:  A 118-car transfer run from the Seaboard System to the Union Pacific has just changed crews at the Central Avenue grade crossing, and is about to begin climbing the Huey P. Long Bridge. The yellow UP Suburban on the left had just delivered the train's new crew. Carryalls from most of the city's railroads were a common sight here in the days before contract crew haulers and new interchange locations. The train had UP SD40-2 3251 and MP SD40 3076 with 118 cars, of which 84 were auto racks; so it was a VERY long train. The red tank car on the left was the New Orleans Public Belt's fire car for the bridge.

Mississippi River and Railroads
Title:  Mississippi River and Railroads
Description:  This bird’s-eye view was looking upstream along the east bank of the Mississippi River at river mile 101, next to Audubon Park in New Orleans. The two railroad tracks next to the right (east) side of the levee belonged to the New Orleans Public Belt and the other two were owned by the Illinois Central Gulf. The track running up the levee provided the NOPB access to the NASHVILLE AVENUE WHARF. This view is facing almost directly north, and Lake Pontchartrain can be seen in the far distance, seven miles away.

Public Grain Elevator
Title:  Public Grain Elevator
Description:  A pair of unidentified vessels were moored abreast at the unused Public Grain Elevator on the Mississippi River at New Orleans. Built for the Port of New Orleans in 1916, by this time the facility had been made obsolete by about 10 newer privately-operated elevators located between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. The elevator's yellow 80-ton General Electric switch engine was parked at the base of the smoke stack, while the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad's COTTON WAREHOUSE YARD is on the other side of the buildings. The elevator was razed by blowing it up in 1990.

CSX Gentilly Yard
Title:  CSX Gentilly Yard
Description:  The former L&N yard in eastern New Orleans is oriented east-west, and this view is looking northwest. The yard was opened in 1926, and most of the buildings in the center of the photo date from that time. The roundhouse originally had seven stalls and was served by a 90-foot turntable, but four of the stalls had been removed when this photo was taken. The four brick buildings are, from left to right, the Storeroom and Shop Foreman's Office, Locker Room, Storeroom, and Car Repair Building. A yellow Trackmobile can be seen on the right working one of the car repair tracks.

NS Oliver Yard
Title:  NS Oliver Yard
Description:  This is the north end of the former Southern Railway Oliver Yard. The yard is oriented north-south, and this view is facing northwest. The building in the middle of the photo was one of the nicest diesel shops in New Orleans, and the first to be razed. It was demolished in 1991 so that the intermodal yard could be enlarged. Removal of the shop began in June 1991 and the expansion of the pigyback yard was completed in November 1992.

Seatrain Loader
Title:  Seatrain Loader
Description:  This structure was built by the Overseas Railway Corp. in 1928 to load railroad cars onto a ship -- the S.S. SEATRAIN -- for movement to Havana, Cuba. It was located on the west bank of the Mississippi River downstream from New Orleans; and was served by the New Orleans & Lower Coast Railroad, a subsidiary of the Missouri Pacific. Overseas Railway Corp. became Seatrain Lines, and service was expanded to New Jersey in 1932. Service to Cuba ended around 1960 and to New Jersey in 1964. The central business district of New Orleans is in the upper left of the photo, and the white structure in the trees right behind the loader is part of the Mississippi River levee. The loader was finally scrapped at the beginning of the twenty-first century, although the trestle and concrete foundation remain.
