Title:  SP sleeping car 8187
Description:  Southern Pacific 10-section / 1-drawing-room / 2-compartment sleeper 8187 LAKE SUTHERLAND was parked in Shreveport Union Station during February 1954, probably on No. 27, the overnight train to Houston. The car had been built in September 1926 as a plan 3585A, was sold to the SP in 31 December 1948 and became Ferrocarril del Pacífico 209 GONZALES BOCANEGRA in May 1958. It was one of 21 SP Plan 3585A cars sold to the FCP in 1958. Train Nos. 27 left Shreveport for the last time on 25 September 1955. (approximate date of photo)

Description:  The large yard in this photo was the Cotton Belt-Southern Pacific joint facility along the Red River in Shreveport, now the Union Pacific's RIVERFRONT YARD. A 2-stall roundhouse and turntable are on the left and the yard office is at the lower right. The smaller yard in the upper portion of the photo was the KCS SILVER LAKE YARD, a former Louisiana Railway & Navigation Co. facility.

SP-SSW Traffic Dept.
Title:  SP-SSW Traffic Dept.
Description:  The Espee-Cotton Belt Traffic Dept. was on Commerce Street, just north of the joint SP-SSW yard. The red brick building visible between the front of the Traffic Dept. and the large power pole was the former Illinois Central freigth station, and the ICG track running west off of the Red River Bridge passed between the two structures. Espee trains had to negotiate a sharp curve right behind the building, and it was destroyed by a derailment.

Description:  Members of the Kansas City Southern Historical Society were inspecting this unfortunate pair of GP30’s at Deramus Yard during the organization’s 1983 convention in Shreveport. On 28 December 1977 northbound KCS train 66 (running as Extra 4102 North) was en route from Alexandria to Minden, Louisiana with GP30's 4102 and 4116, when it hit a loaded log truck at the Vine St. grade crossing in Goldonna. Twenty-two cars derailed, including a tank car loaded with 31,000 gallons of LPG which ruptured and exploded. The two men on the 4102 did not survive and at least 10 others were injured, including a crew member on the caboose and the truck driver.

Description:  This was the Illinois Central Gulf bridge over the Red River between Shreveport (on the right) and Bossier City. The first bridge at this location was built for the Vicksburg Shreveport & Pacific in 1884, and it was replaced by this structure in 1916. Because the river has moved east, the swing span is no longer in the center of the channel. Subsequent owners had be MidSouth Rail and the Kansas City Southern.

Description:  Kansas City Southern train No. 56 was crossing the Red River and the Clyde Fant Memorial Parkway as it made its way from Bossier City into Shreveport on the KCS-SSW bridge. No. 56 was on its way from the Norfolk Southern at New Orleans to the Santa Fe at Dallas, and it was powered by GP40's 756, 766 and 752.

The track curving in from the right was the Kansas City Southern's former Louisiana & Arkansas line from New Orleans, while the two tracks underneath the bridges were the KCS line from Port Arthur.

Description:  Assorted KCS units congregate outside the service building at Deramus Yard. On the first track are SW1500 4322, SD40 623 and SW1500 4356, while further back are GP7 4150 and MP15DC 4363. On the second track are SD40's 622, 625, 627, 626 and 624. The 622-627 had been built in June 1970 and their 15-year lease had just expired, so they were all parked here awaiting the return to their lessor. They became Soo Line 6400-6405 the following year.

Description:  By 1985, there weren't many yards on Class I railroads where one could still find active F-units. Here at Deramus Yard are F7A's 4059 (ex-73A and 73), 4054 (59D and 86) and 4064 (76D and 93). Also here were F-unit slugs 4050, 4055 and 4076. The Santa Fe geep barely visible between the 4054 and 4064 came in from Dallas on a run-through train.
