IC GP9 9054 |
Description: |
A trio of black Illinois Central units - GP9's 9054 and 9313 along with GP40 3003 - had uncoupled from a southbound ICG train at Hammond, Louisiana and run down to the depot so a crewman could exchange some paperwork with the agent there. The track on the right was the south leg of the wye, and up until 1971 this line ran all the way to Covington. (approximate day) |

IC Geeps |
Description: |
Illinois Central geeps 9054, 9313 and 3003 were backing onto their southbound train (on the left) after having run down to the Hammond depot to exchange some paperwork with the agent. The trainman next to the middle unit would throw the switch for the line to Baton Rouge as soon as the engines pass. The passenger cars on the left belonged to the Southeast Louisiana Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, while the geep on the right was the Hammond Switcher. This photo was taken about 20 months after the IC-GM&O merger, but this still looked just like the IC! (approximate date) |

IC(G) GP9 9201 |
Description: |
The Illinois Central bought 26 GP9's equipped for passenger service, and all were built with a 62:15 (65 MPH) gear ratio; but this was one of four units (9200-9203) modified with high-speed 59:18 (85 MPH) gearing for use on the Chicago-Omaha line. By the time the 9201 was photographed deep in Gulf Mobile & Ohio territory - across from the Bogalusa depot - its high-speed days were long over. It was subsequently rebuilt in May 1979 as Ashley Drew & Northern GP10 1811. (approximate day) |

IC GP9 9305 |
Description: |
In 1957 EMD made a number of internal and external changes to its GP9, and the most noticable alteration in appearance was the use of two 48-inch radiator fans instead of four 36-inch ones. The Illinois Central received 60 of these units in December 1957 and January 1958; and to easily distinguish them from the older GP9's (9000-9257) it put them in a new 9300-series. Here was the 9305 in Bogalusa, with GP18 9416. (approximate date) |

IC GP9 9342 |
Description: |
Illinois Central (Gulf) GP9 9342 was one of several unrebuilt geeps stored at the ICG's Mays Yard, just west of New Orleans. By this time, the Paducah rebuild programs had ended and this 25-year old unit probably never ran again. |
