IC Transfer Run
Title:  IC Transfer Run
Description:  Illinois Central SW9 442 was on a westbound (timetable north) transfer run at EAST BRIDGE JUNCTION as it approached the ICG’s MAYS YARD just west of New Orleans. In the background, on the right of the train, was EAST BRIDGE TOWER, which controlled the tracks around the east end of the Huey P. Long Bridge. The 442 had been built in June 1951 as IC 9442, was renumbered in 1959 and was rebuilt into ICG SW14 1481 in 1981. (approximate date of photo)

Illinois Central Gulf DOCK JOB
Title:  Illinois Central Gulf DOCK JOB
Description:  When this photo was taken, the Illinois Central Gulf’s DOCK JOB ran from the railroad’s MAYS YARD, on the west side of New Orleans, to its STUYVESANT DOCKS YARD, along the Mississippi River. Here was the train on a gloomy afternoon, on its way to the docks with a couple of Lamco Railroad SD10 units right behind IC SW9 442. Lamco 315 and 316 were originally Union Pacific SD7’s and had just been rebuilt by the ICG’s Paducah Shops for LAMCO - the Liberian-American-Swedish Mining Co. They were exported to Buchanan, Liberia from New Orleans.

ICG Mays Yard
Title:  ICG Mays Yard
Description:  A small group of people had gathered outside the Illinois Central Gulf's LOUISIANA DIVISION HEADQUARTERS OFFICE at Mays Yard to watch the AMERICAN FREEDOM TRAIN pass on its way into New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. It was probably the first time a 4-8-4 had even run over these tracks. IC SW9 460 was off to the left.

IC SW9 468
Title:  IC SW9 468
Description:  When I took this slide at the ICG's Levee Yard -- along the Mississippi River near the heart of New Orleans -- I was just interested in getting a good shot of the 468. As it turned out, it was the only photo I ever took on any ICG activity here. This entire area became the site of the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition, and any evidence of the extensive IC, L&N, and SP infrastructure that had occupied this part of the New Orleans riverfront disappeared.

Years later, I realized that the true significance of this image was the background activity... the construction of the Riverfront Hilton was a harbinger of the massive and rapid redevelopment of this area that would erase almost all evidence of the railroads that had been here for 100 years.

IC SW9 1244
Title:  IC SW9 1244
Description:  Illinois Central (Gulf) SW9 1244 was stopped at the south end of Baton Rouge Yard, and that's the Louisiana state capitol behind the cab. The locomotive was built in June 1951 as IC 9446, was renumbered 446 so that the 9400-series could be used for GP18's, and then renumbered 1244 when it was equipped for multiple-unit operation. It was rebuilt as ICG SW14 1449 the year after this photo was taken.

Description:  Multiple-unit equipped Illinois Central SW9 9333 was photographed at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal while construction was still going on. On the other side of the locomotive is the NOUPT Railway Express Agency building, which was completed in 1950. NOUPT had just been placed in partial operation -- for IC, MP (GCL) and SP trains -- and it was placed in full operation on 16 April 1954. The 9333 was renumbered 1233 in September 1957 and rebuilt into SW14 1437 in September 1980.
