KCS SD50 707 |
Description: |
Kansas City Southern 704-713 were built in May and June 1981 as the first regular production SD50 units. These ten locomotives, along with GP40-2's 796 and 797, were built with a forward-facing strobe light and two roof-mounted strobes. The 707 was two-and-a-half years old when it was photographed at West Yard, just outside of New Orleans. |

KCS SD50 710 |
Description: |
Kansas City Southern SD50 710 was only one month old when it was photographed on the wye at West Yard, just outside of New Orleans. KCS 704-713 were the first "full-length" units of this model, following N&W 6500-6505 which were built on shorter SD40-2 frames. Notice the forward-facing strobe light, as well as the strobes on the cab roof. Only a dozen KCS units were built with this arrangement of strobes, these SD50's as well as GP40-2's 796 and 797. |

KCS SD50 712 and SD40-2 656 |
Description: |
On Thursday morning 28 March 2002 Kansas City Southern northbound intermodal train No. 10 struck an 18-wheeler loaded with concrete piles at the Louisiana Concrete Products grade crossing in Baton Rouge. This photo was taken three days later, and shows the train’s first two engines parked on the BATON ROUGE MORNING ADVOCATE newspaper plant siding. The damage to the train’s lead unit, SD50 712, is obvious; while the second unit, SD40-2 656, had a gash on the engineer’s side of its fuel tank. The train’s third unit, SD40M-2 626, was unharmed, as was the crew. |
