KCS Deramus Yard (6)
Title:  KCS Deramus Yard (6)
Description:  Members of the Kansas City Southern Historical Society were inspecting this unfortunate pair of GP30’s at Deramus Yard during the organization’s 1983 convention in Shreveport. On 28 December 1977 northbound KCS train 66 (running as Extra 4102 North) was en route from Alexandria to Minden, Louisiana with GP30's 4102 and 4116, when it hit a loaded log truck at the Vine St. grade crossing in Goldonna. Twenty-two cars derailed, including a tank car loaded with 31,000 gallons of LPG which ruptured and exploded. The two men on the 4102 did not survive and at least 10 others were injured, including a crew member on the caboose and the truck driver.

KCS GP30 4103
Title:  KCS GP30 4103
Description:  With one exception, all of the Kansas City Southern's 20 GP30's were repainted from their original red color into the white scheme when they reached their 15th birthdays in 1977-78 and their trusts were paid off. Here is recently-repainted 4103 in the joint KCS-SLSF yard in Hope, Arkansas, just south of the crossing with the Missouri Pacific's main line between Little Rock and Texarkana. This GP30-F7B-GP30 set of power had arrived from Shreveport on train No. 24, and would return south on No. 23. The 4103 was retired in 1990 and sold to the Southeast Kansas Railroad two years later. Today the KCS no longer serves Hope, and this yard belongs to the Kiamichi Railroad

KCS 4117
Title:  KCS 4117
Description:  Back in 1984 transfer runs from the Kansas City Southern to the New Orleans Public Belt typically had 10-20 cars and were handled by a switch engine; but today the train had 40 loaded C&NW hoppers behind the 12 cars of mixed freight, so the railroad used one of the GP30's which were assigned to New Orleans for local work. The train is on the NOPB at Walnut Street.
