MP GP18 1861 |
Description: |
Missouri Pacific 1861 was built in 1960 as the 4808, one of 24 GP18's constructed using components from the railroad's two dozen FT units as trade-in credit. These 24 units wjre built with high noses, and this one subsequently received a factory low nose and, like most MP geeps, a 4-stack exhaust manifold. The 4808 was subsequently renumbered 512 and then 1861. It was retired in April 1984 and sold to Precisign National Corp. The photo was taken at Race Street Yard in New Orleans. |

L&N Transfer Run |
Description: |
A Louisville & Nashville transfer run was crossing Florida Avenue in New Orleans, on its way from the Missouri Pacific's Race Street Yard to the L&N's Gentilly Yard. The locomotives visible here were the MP GP18 1868, L&N GP30 1035 and L&N GP38-2 4054. The image was dated October 1971, but that must be incorrect because the L&N 4054 wasn't built until January 1972. (approximate date) |

MP GP18 1976 |
Description: |
This Missouri Pacific Bicentennial unit was built as the 481 in December 1962 and was renumbered 1976 in the general system renumbering of 1973. It was repainted into bicentennial colors in 1976 and was retired in 1984. Somewhere along the line, it received paper air filters, a feature that was not very common on older MP geeps. |
