Powered by an eclectic set of locomotives, a Southern Pacific EXTRA WEST was heading out of the railroad's Avondale Yard, just west of New Orleans. Southern Railway GP35 2680, SD40-2 3257 and an unidentified SP B30-7 were providing the motive power as the train rolled across the George Street grade crossing. Southern Train No. 193 |
Description: |
Even though Norfolk Southern Corp. had been in existence for over three years, this still looks like a Southern Railway train! Birmingham-Houston run-through train 193 pauses on the New Orleans Public Belt at the east end of the Huey Long Bridge, where the NS delivered it to the Espee. Behind GP35 2684 are GP38-2 5183, U23B 3931 and GP38-2 5159, 86 cars, and Espee caboose 4611. Earlier in the day, a ceremony was held on the bridge to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of its opening in 1935. |

Southern Train 115 |
Description: |
Southern Railway No. 115, the run-through train from Birmingham to the Missouri Pacific at New Orleans, was about five miles away from the end of its journey at the east end of the Huey P. Long Bridge as it rumbled over the Orleans Avenue canal bridge. Back when car use charges were computed on a daily basis, with a midnight cut-off, the Southern scheduled No. 115 and SP run-through train No. 193 out of Birmingham so they were delivered in the late evening, getting those cars off of its property before midnight! Southern Local |
Description: |
During WWII the U.S. Government built an aircraft assembly plant along Lake Pontchartrain in New Orleans and the Southern Railway constructed a 1-mile spur to serve it. Here, Consolidated Vultee (later known as Convair) built about 220 PBY-5 CATALINA amphibious patrol planes. Unlike most aircraft plants, this one had no runways; so each finished plane was moved down a ramp into the lake where it took off! After the war the plant was sold to American Standard and was used to manufacture plumbing fixtures. Up into the 1980’s the plant was served by the northbound local out of New Orleans, but later it was switched by a yard job. In this undated view the local was pulling out of the plant, crossing Leon C. Simon Dr. and about to cross Franklin Ave. The spur was removed after the plant closed. (date of photo unknown) |
