Southern SD45 3439 |
Description: |
The Southern Railway’s 70 SD45’s were among my all-time favorite diesel locomotives, and none of my images illustrate them better than this one. The engineer on Southern 3139 was biding his time as he waited for a clear route on the New Orleans Terminal Co. at the Frenchmen Street signal. No. 3139 was on No. 194, the run-through train from the Southern Pacific to Birmingham, along with SD35 3090 and SD45 3100. |

Southern SD45 3154 |
Description: |
For many years, the locomotives that arrived in New Orleans on the Southern Railway's southbound piggyback train No. 219 went back out on northbound No. 222. This usually worked well, but if No. 219 was running late, the railroad would take one or two locally-assigned geeps and head out with No. 222. When the two trains met, they would swap locomotives, and everything would return to normal. On this day, the local unit - GP38 2736 - only had to go five miles with No. 222 before it met No. 219 at the Airport crossover. Here, No. 219's power - SD45 3154H and 3169A, and SD35 3061X - has uncoupled from its train and is pulling up next to the 2736. The crews will swap engines, the engines will swap trains, and then both trains will be on their way. The drawbridge in the background crosses the Inner Harbor Navigation Canal at Milepost 190.6. |

SOU 3166 |
Description: |
It's 5:55 P.M. as Southern SD45's 3166, 3132, and SD40 3170 lead train No. 222 north across the Lake Pontchartrain trestle 25 miles north of New Orleans. Even though this is officially a piggyback train, the first five car are assorted "cover cars" and behind them is a large block of LPG tank cars. These tank cars originated at Toca, Louisiana -- on a Southern branch line south of New Orleans -- and regularly moved north on No. 222 throughout the 1970's. Today is a Saturday and the train doesn't have many intermodal cars. It only has 50 cars and caboose X730. |

Southern SD Units on Huey P. Long Bridge |
Description: |
An eastbound train was descending the Huey P. Long Bridge behind a trio of Southern Railway 6-axle units: SD40 3188, SD40-2 3243 and SD45 3168. The train originated at the Missouri Pacific’s AVONDALE YARD, at the west end of the bridge, and would become Southern Railway train 114 when a Southern crew took over at the east end of the bridge. |
