SP 8614 |
Description: |
U33C 8614, SD45T-2 9376 and SD45 8808 accelerate an eastbound extra past Mallard Junction, on its way out of Lake Charles yard. The switch was the beginning of the Lake Arthur Branch, and is still the connection with the Lake Charles Harbor & Terminal District's railroad. Notice the block of Pacific Fruit Express reefers right behind the locomotives. |

SP First 241 |
Description: |
The head-end brakeman on westbound Espee train First 241 was poised to snag his orders at the Raceland Junction train order office, as a couple of young railfans and their mom looked on. These folks had come out to see Amtrak's TRANSCONTINENTAL STEAM EXCURSION, with FREEDOM TRAIN 4449, which had just passed a few minutes earlier. The locomotives on First 241 were U33C's 8659 and 8664, along with SD45 9095. Later in the day - at Lacasine, Louisiana - First 241 would overtake the excursion train and the 9095 would be cut in behind the 4449 because of a problem with the steam engine. The tracks in the foreground are the beginning of the Lockport Branch. |

Westbound Coal Train |
Description: |
Southern Pacific U33C 8663, GP35 6628, GP20 4063 and GP20R 4100 power a 90-car westbound coal train up the Huey P. Long Bridge. The coal originated in Illinois on the Illinois Central Gulf and was bound for Mexico. This was not a true unit train, as it had been divided into several cuts when it was interchanged from the ICG to the SP near the east end of the bridge. |

Southern Railway Train No. 194 |
Description: |
Southern Railway train No. 194 was heading north through Slidell, Louisiana behind Southern Pacific U33C 8782, SD45T-2 9190 and a third SP unit. This run-through train between Houston and Birmingham was just south of the Slidell station, and the track in the foreground was the south leg of the wye that had served a creosote plant along nearby Bayou Bonfouca. A creosote plant was first built here in 1892 to treat wood for the New Orleans & Northeastern Railroad’s trestle across Lake Pontchartrain. The plant closed in 1970 and the area was subsequently designated as an EPA Superfund site. After the creosote-contaminated soil was incinerated and the wye was removed, a 54-acre area west of the railroad station which once included the wye and the creosote plant was redeveloped by the city as HERITAGE PARK.
