SP Transfer Run |
Description: |
A westbound Southern Pacific transfer run was passing the LSU Dental School on the Southern Railway’s New Orleans Terminal Co. subsidiary, en route from the Louisville & Nashville’s GENTILLY YARD to the Espee’s AVONDALE YARD. The transfer run was powered by seven locomotives, which had gone to the L&N on two separate trains. Combining power on transfer runs from the L&N to the SP was not unusual because there was typically an imbalance of traffic, with more eastbound trains. The locomotives were SSW GP20R 4137, SP GP20’s 4085 and 4079, SSW GP20R’s 4143 and 4148, SP GP35 6664 and SSW GP35 6502. |

SSW GP35 6507 |
Description: |
Cotton Belt GP35 6507 and four other geeps were on a westbound Southern Pacific train at Austin, Texas. The train was tied down just east of Airport Blvd. waiting for a new crew, since changing crews here prevented it from tying up traffic. The track on the far left was the main line of the MKT. SSW 6681 |
Description: |
An estbound Espee train -- probably the HOSOM -- nears the end of its journey from Houston to New Orleans as it approaches Avondale Yard. The motive power was a pair of GP35's and GP49 4604, and the appearance of Cotton Belt 6681 -- the highest numbered SP/SSW GP35 -- makes quite a contrast with that of Southern 2670! The train had 151 cars and SP caboose 1903. |
