FIRST H.E.P. PANAMA LIMITED
Title:  FIRST H.E.P. PANAMA LIMITED
Description:  The brutally-cold weather in January 1977 took a significant portion of Amtrak's steam-heated equipment out of service with freeze damage, and the carrier responded by cancelling several long-distance trains including the PANAMA LIMITED. After an absence of about two weeks the PANAMA was reinstated as an all-coach Amfleet train, and here is the first example backing into New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. The railroad was finally able to add a PACIFIC-series 10-6 sleeper at the end of the year, restoring First Class service to the train.

Amtrak No. 58
Title:  Amtrak No. 58
Description:  During January 1977 extremely cold weather took quite a few of Amtrak’s steam-heated cars out of service, so the railroad was forced to discontinue several long-distance trains, including the PANAMA LIMITED. After an absence of several weeks, the train was reinstated on 25 January with Amfleet coaches and food service cars, plus a 600-series baby baggage car; but a sleeping car was not added until December. Here is No. 58 on 6 February, approaching CARROLLTON JUNCTION on New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal track with a typical consist, although the baggage car is behind the coaches and ICG office car 6 is on the rear.

Gulf Coast Limited
Title:  Gulf Coast Limited
Description:  It's 10:20 A.M. and this special edition of the westbound GULF COAST LIMITED (No. 23) is stopped on the Southern Railway BACK BELT at the Elysian Fields Avenue overpass. In addition to No. 23's typical consist of a P30CH and three Amfleet cars, F40 274 is on the front while extra coach 21068 and inspection car 10000 are on the rear. The extra equipment was in the midst of an inspection tour that had begun in Atlanta on the 9th. The little train ran over the former West Point Route to Montgomery, up the former L&N to Birmingham and then down to Mobile; where it was added to No. 23.

All of those people standing next to the train are making sure that the last two cars are being successfully uncoupled so the train can continue on to its destination at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. Southern Railway MP15DC 2413, seen here waiting on the Freight Lead, delivered the last two cars to the ICG at East Bridge Junction, where fresh-serviced F40 279 was waiting. From East Bridge Junction, the train ran over the ICG to Baton Rouge; and the next day it continued on to Shreveport over the KCS.
