L&D |
Description: |
Just two months after the Louisiana & Delta purchased a group of branch lines from the Southern Pacific, one of the two GP9R's (L&D 1751, ex-SP 3434) based at Baldwin was already painted in the L&D's colors. The other geep was ex-SP 3790. The L&D also acquired the Baldwin depot -- visible in the center of the photo -- as a crew base for the Cypremort and Bayou Sale jobs that worked out of here. The beginning of the Cypremort Branch can be seen curving off to the south just west of the depot, while the Bayou Sale Branch begins 10 miles east of here. |

The locomotive was built in January 1957 as Southern Pacific 5738, was renumbered SP 3579 in 1965 and upgraded into SP 3790 in June 1976. The L&D got the unit when the railroad began operating in March 1987, and it went to the Willamette & Pacific as 1803 SHEWOOD in mid-1993. |

Description: |
The Norfolk Southern's run-through train from Birmingham to the Espee passes through East City Junction on the NS BACK BELT. East City Tower, behind the lead locomotive, closed in July 1972; and the track on the right is the beginning of the NS Bernadotte Branch. Today's train is unusual in that it has a set of transfer units instead of road power. The train has SP GP9R 3435, EMD GP38-2's 830 and 766, and Rio Grande GP40 3066 with 96 cars. |

The 3735 began life as Texas & New Orleans 439, which explained the lack of an oscillating light fixture. |

Eastbound Espee on Huey P. Long Bridge |
Description: |
An eastbound Southern Pacific train was descending the Huey P. Long Bridge above the east traffic circle. The train was powered by GP9R’s 3774 and 3801, SD45T-2’s 9234 and 9246, and SD45 9110. The building on the right was the New Orleans Public Belt Railroad’s bridge administration building. It was demolished when the bridge’s traffic lanes were widened in 2006-2013, and a replacement was built next to the east end of the bridge at the Central Avenue grade crossing. |
