SP Super Bowl Special
Title: SP Super Bowl Special
Description: At 4:03 on a dark and wet Saturday afternoon the Southern Pacific's 15-car special for Super Bowl XX was about to back in to New Orlean Union Passenger Terminal. However, the dreary weather nicely accentuated the number boards, Gyralight, headlight, extra lights and ground light. The train consisted of SDP45's 3207 and 3201, baggage cars 295 and 298, 10-6 sleeper 292, diner 290, lounge cars 291 and 289 CITY OF ANGELS, and office cars 117 TUCSON, 151 PINE BLUFF, 131 LOS ANGELES, 141 OAKLAND, 99 HOUSTON, 100 AIRSLIE, 106 OREGON, 110 STANFORD and 150 SUNSET. It was quite a train!

Southern Pacific SDP45's 3201 and 3207 had arrived the previous day on a 15-car Super Bowl Special. On the same track are P30CH 708 and a sibling, next to them are F40's 262 and 264, and two tracks over are P30's 716 and 706 with F40's 328 and 323. Even more units, including an Amtrak E9A, SDP40F and two Seaboard System F-units, were behind the photographer.

Super Bowl XX
Title: Super Bowl XX
Description: In very fresh SPSF paint, a pair of Southern Pacific SDP45's sit outside the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal engine house, while Super Bowl XX was taking place behind them in the Louisiana Super Dome. The two units had arrived the previous day with a 15-car Super Bowl Special. In the background, F40 391 wears special SUPER BOWL SHUTTLE markings on its nose. It had come in earlier in the day with a nine-car special from Chicago. On the track next to the 391 are an E9A, SDP40F, P30CH and two Seaboard System F-units. The Chicago fans went home happy, as their BEARS beat the New England PATRIOTS 46-10.

Power for the SUNSET
Title: Power for the SUNSET
Description: Southern Pacific SDP45 3207 and FP7 6453 were backing on to the westbound SUNSET at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. The former Illinois Central car in the background was a stored observation-lounge, either the 3300 or the 3305. Both of these had been sold in 1969 and they were kept at NOUPT until the beginning of 1972. (approximate date of photo)

SP SDP45 3207
Title: SP SDP45 3207
Description: The United Transportation Union struck the UP and the Southern on 16 July 1971, and then the SP and the N&W on 24 July. Because of the strike threat against the SP, Amtrak’s SUNSET LIMITED which should have left New Orleans on Friday 23 July was annulled, and this provided a rare (at that time) opportunity to photograph a set of SUNSET power at NOUPT over that weekend. On the day the strike began, SP SDP45 3207, UP E8B 927B and UP E9A 947 were photographed on the engine service track. (The E-units were eventually renumbered Amtrak 370 and 424.) The strike was quickly ended and the SUNSET left on schedule on Monday 26 July.

NS No. 193
Title: NS No. 193
Description: Norfolk Southern No. 193 (and later 393) was the run-through train from Birmingham to Houston via the SP. Here it was stopped on the NS at the Marconi Drive underpass, waiting for a clear route to the Huey P. Long Bridge about five miles away. When it got to the east end of the bridge, an SP crew would get on and take it cross the Mississippi River to their Avondale Yard. This train had SP SD45T-2 9309, along with former Conrail SDP45's 6688 and 6689 which the SP was leasing from VMV Enterprises. These SDP45's were originally Erie Lackawanna units, and when their lease expired Conrail retired them. Along the way, the 6688 had an accident and its long hood was replaced with one made for an SD45-2.

VMV SDP45 6688
Title: VMV SDP45 6688
Description: This may look like an SD45-2, but it is actaully an SDP45 that had been rebuilt with an SD45-2 radiator section after an accident. It was originally Erie-Lackawanna 3657, and then Conrail and VMV 6688. The unit was photographed while on lease to the Espee on Norfolk Southern No. 193, the run-through train from Birmingham to Houston via the Espee. The train was parked on the NS BACK BELT at Marconi Drive.
