NL&G GP38 46 |
Description: |
This image of North Louisiana & Gulf GP38 46 illustrates the built-out cab front that was used on 15 Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines GP38's, 14 Penn Central GP38's and 5 Reading SD45's between 1967 and 1971. The design provided extra space inside the cab on units equipped with a dual-control console. This was a large box in the middle of the cab, with a set of controls on each side, and was offered as an alternative to using two complete sets of controls in opposite corners of the cab. This unit was built as PRSL 2000, and was subsequently Conrail 7660, NL&G 46, Iowa Interstate 600, GMTX 2080 and then GMTX 2690. Dodson, Louisiana is on the former Rock Island line between Hodge and Winnfield. |

GM&O Engines |
Description: |
Four months after the Gulf, Mobile & Ohio was merged into the Illinois Central Gulf, things hadn't changed much at Bogalusa; but this wouldn't last long. All of the GM&O RS2's were retired between 1973 and 1975, mostly replaced with GP10's; and the GM&O GP38's moved to other parts of the ICG. (month OK, approximate day) |

While assigned to yard and transfer service at New Orleans, Southern GP38 2761 was "customized" with green paint insde the "O" in its road name. While this was a standard feature on the railroad's freight cars -- a part of its "Southern Gives a Green Light to Innovation" marketing campaign -- it was wasn't suppose to show up on locomotives! The 2761 was built with a small 1700-gallon fuel tank, but here it has a 3,000-gallon tank from a retired SD35. The building on the right is the tower at Oliver Yard. (month approximate) |

Southern No. 58 |
Description: |
A late-running Southern Railway No. 58, the New Orleans-Meridian local, was entering the siding at Slidell during a very unusual south Louisiana snowfall. The train was running with GP38 2796 and GP30 2528, and was here to meet piggyback train No. 219. The track on the other side of the 2796 was the south leg of the Slidell wye. The wye's tail track served the American Creosote Works plant, which later became an EPA Superfund site. The wye was subsequently removed. |
