NOPSI at the New Basin Canal |
Description: |
An unidentified New Orleans Public Service street car was crossing the NEW BASIN CANAL drawbridge on South Carrollton Avenue. This was a TULANE BELT car heading towards the Mississippi River. The streetcar line here was replaced by the TULANE trolleybus line on 8 January 1951, and the canal was filled in shortly after that. PELICAN STADIUM was on the other side of the canal; it was torn down in October 1957. (approximate date of photo) |

NOPSI Arabella Station |
Description: |
The New Orleans Public Service’s ARABELLA STATION at 5600 Magazine Street had been built in 1893-94 and, after several changes in ownership, was acquired by NOPSI in 1922. The building was used by streetcars until 1948, and when this photo was taken in 1954 it served both internal-combustion and electric buses; but the last trolley buses were withdrawn in 1967. It was acquired by the city’s Regional Transit Authority in 1983 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places on 4 January 1996. After being unused for several years, RTA sold it in 2001 and it was redeveloped as a Whole Foods Market which opened in December 2002. (approximate date of photo) |

North Villere Street |
Description: |
This view facing east on North Villere Street at Mandeville Street showed that former streetcar tracks were still in the intersection 45 years after streetcar service ended here. The tracks were last used by the New Orleans Public Service VILLERE car line on 21 February 1926, after which the line was rerouted and renamed GENTILLY. These tracks were still here in 2020. |

It was one of two cars been built in 1987 by Hall Industries of Ellwood City, Pennsylvania and these were replaced in March 2020 with new ones manufactured by Brookville Equipment Corporation in Brookville, Pennsylvania. NOPSI Trolleybus 1339 |
Description: |
New Orleans Public Service trolleybus 1339 was a Marmon-Herrington model TC-44 built in 1947, so it was about a year old when this photo was taken on the FRERET route. The FRERET streetcars had been replaced by gasoline-powered buses on 1 December 1946, trolleybuses took over on 4 September 1947 and then diesel-powered buses replaced them on 10 June 1963. The MARMON-HERRINGTON lettering above the front number didn't last long. NOPSI received the 1338 on 30 October 1947 and retired it on 2 July 1963, after 409,109 miles. (approximate date of photo) |

NOPSI 868 and 1746 |
Description: |
Two New Orleans Public Service vehicles were stopped on Willow Street at South Carrollton Avenue. LEONIDAS bus 1746 was a White Motor Co. MODEL 788 built in 1948 and was making a regular stop, while TULANE car 868 was on its way from the Carrollton Car Barn to South Carrollton Avenue. It had been built by the J.G. Brill Co. in 1922 and was scrapped in May 1952. Up until 6 December 1923 Willow Street had been named Poplar, which is why the theater on the left has that name. (unknown date of photo) |
