Description: |
Southern Pacific S4 1811 was one of two Alco switchers parked outside the railroad's office in Gretna, Louisiana. This unit had been built in 1951 as SP 1483 and it was traded-in to General Electric in 1972. Up until the opening of the Huey P. Long Bridge in December, Gretna had been on the main line of the SUNSET ROUTE, but after that it was just an industrial branch. The tall building in the background was the Jefferson Parish Court House. (approximate day and month) |

Here were a couple of anonymous old Alcos that were parked near Beaumont, Texas. The RS1 was built as Lake Superior & Ishpeming 1001 (79576), then it went to George Silcott, L.B. Foster and then the Sabine River & Northern where it was renumbered 101. The S4 was built as New York Central (Pittsburg & Lake Erie) 8638 (80644) and it too went to George Silcott, L.B. Foster and the SR&N. Both of the locos subsequently went to Houston Chemical Co. at Beaumont. |

BRCX SW1200 8050 and CLCX S4m 98106 |
Description: |
This was Bunge’s grain elevator at Destrehan, Louisiana, as photographed from the Mississippi River levee. SW1200 8050 was serial number 19537, built in August 1954 as Oliver Iron Mining 943 and then it went to U.S. Steel’s Fairless Works as second 22. U.S.S. sold it to McHugh Brothers, then it went to Bunge at Marks, Mississippi and then it moved to Destrehan when the Marks elevator was razed. The other unit was CLCX (Chattahoochee Locomotive Corp.) 98106, a former Alco S4 which had been repowered by Johnson Railway Service. This elevator was opened in 1961 and is served by the Canadian National. |
