SP LAAVT |
Description: |
Eastbound Espee train LAAVT -- the Los Angeles to Avondale Trailers -- casts its reflection in a pond just west of the Schriever depot, about 45 miles from the end of its trip. The three B30-7's were Cotton Belt 7796 along with Espee 7814 and 7858. Right behind the locomotives was SP 513339, a part of the Espee's pioneering order for 42 articulated double stack container cars 513302-513343 delivered by ACF the previous year. |

SSW B30-7 7796 |
Description: |
Eastbound Espee train LAAVT -- the Los Angeles to Avondale Trailers -- had just finished doing some work at Morgan City, about 70 miles from its destination. The three B30-7's were Cotton Belt 7796 along with Espee 7814 and 7858. Notice that the 7796 still had the sound baffles mounted on the handrails next to its radiator intake. Right behind the locomotives was SP 513339, a part of the Espee's pioneering order for 42 articulated double stack container cars 513302-513343 delivered by ACF the previous year. (SP 513300 and 513301 were prototype cars built in 1977 and 1979.) This was the first time I ever saw a stack car, and when I took this photo SP 513300-513343 were the only stack cars in existence! |

On the left was a trio of freshly-painted SBD U-Boats - U33B 5624 with U36B's 5773 and 5752 - on a United States Lines stack train en route from the Missouri Pacific in Houston to Savannah, Georgia. The other train – with Cotton Belt B30-7 7796, SP SD45 9107 and SD40T-2 8232 – was on its way from Gentilly to the Espee’s Avondale Yard, on the other side of the Mississippi River. |

SP B30-7 7805 |
Description: |
Southern Pacific SD40T-2 8362 and B30-7 7805 were pulling a Louisville & Nashville train towards the railroad's GENTILLY YARD at Read Boulevard. The cars had been a southbound run-through train which was parked out on the MICHOUD SIDING because the SP wasn't ready to accept it, and now these two units had been sent out from the L&N yard to pick it up. |

SP 7867 |
Description: |
A trio of B30-7's -- SP 7867 and 7804 with Cotton Belt 7779 -- head east out of New Iberia along East St. Peter Street (Highway 182) at the Evangeline Street grade crossing. The locomotives have just passed the speed board when the speed limit goes from 25 to 40 MPH. Back when this photo was taken, trios of B-Boats were common power on the SUNSET ROUTE in Louisiana. For 60 years, the open area between St. Peter Street and the Espee had been the right-of-way of another railroad. The Iberia, St. Mary & Eastern was incorporated in 1909 to build a line from New Iberia east 48 miles to Patterson; and ran right next to the Espee for much of that distance. The IStM&E was leased by the New Iberia & Northern in 1911, which was then controlled by the Frisco; and both railroads became a part of the Missouri Pacific in 1924. The old IStM&E track here was abandoned in 1970, when the MP obtained trackage rights over the SP between New Iberia and Garden City; but MP service east of New Iberia ended in 1980 and the railroad stopped operating into New Iberia in 1982. |
