MP 11
Title:  MP 11
Description:  MP U30C's were VERY uncommon in New Orleans, so it was really special to find the 11 as the trailing unit on a transfer run from the MoP's Race Street Yard to Avondale Yard. The train is on the New Orleans Public Belt at Oak Street, and the two tracks in the foreground were the former KCS-NOPB interchange. This GE was built as the 970, and was subsequently the 11, 3310, and 2975.

L&N Engineer Ernest Harper
Title:  L&N Engineer Ernest Harper
Description:  Louisville & Nashville engineer Ernest Harper was waving to some photographers as he accelerated north out of the railroad’s GENTILLY YARD in New Orleans. The train was powered by U30C 1556, SD40 1236 and U30C 1562, with L&N caboose 1360 cut into the train and Southern Pacific caboose 1734 on the rear. When this photo was taken, 6-axle locomotives were not very common on the L&N in New Orleans.

Title:  UP U30C 2906
Description:  Union Pacific U30C 2906 was parked on the New Orleans Public Belt on a westbound transfer run from the Seaboard System to the Missouri Pacific. A Seaboard crew had brought the train over from their GENTILLY YARD here to Shrewsbury Road; and when the MP was ready, they would send a crew to pick up the train and bring it to their AVONDALE YARD at the west end of the Huey P. Southern No. 193
Title:  Southern No. 193
Description:  Southern Railway No. 193 – the run-though train with the Southern Pacific between Birmingham and Houston – was cresting the 5-mile-long grade at Richburg Hill, south of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Today’s train was a bit unusual because it had three big Espee General Electric units – U30C 7903 with U33C’s 8669 and 8729 – and they were all running backwards. The Southern was well-known for running its own locomotives long-hood forward, but this was a really rare sight. The sound of those big U-boats working uphill was 120 cars, long before they showed up, was amazing!
