SCL 1740, SBD 2719, and SBD 6028
Title:  SCL 1740, SBD 2719, and SBD 6028
Description:  Seaboard System New Orleans-Birmingham train No. 470 crosses the Rigolets Drawbridge, 26 miles east of Gentilly Yard in New Orleans. The Rigolets is a pass which connects Lake Pontchartrain -- off to the right -- with the Gulf of Mexico on the left, and the New Orleans city limit is on the far shore. The slide was taken through the windshield of a helicopter, which explains the poor quality of the image.

L&N U23B 2800
Title:  L&N U23B 2800
Description:  In 1974 the L&N eliminated the yellow nose from its paint scheme, adopting the rather austere appearance modeled by the first two units on this run-through train from the SP to the L&N. One-month-old U23B 2800 arrived from the GE factory looking like this, while GP30 1052 had been recently repainted into this scheme. The other locomotives are U23B 2700 (ex-Monon 601) and GP30 1040. The train is stopped on the Southern Railway's BACK BELT at Frenchmen Street, waiting for a clear route onto the L&N at L&N Junction.

Southern U23B 3917
Title:  Southern U23B 3917
Description:  Southern Railway U23B 3917 is about to enter Oliver Yard with a special train of oversize steel girders. Although it is a special train, it is flying green flags, which show that it is running as the first section of a regularly-scheduled train. In this case, it is operating as First No. 169.

The train has just passed under the Almonaster Avenue overpass, crossed the former New Orleans Terminal Co. main line, and is crossing the Florida Avenue drainage canal. The NOTCO crossings were eventually removed.

MP U23B 4528
Title:  MP U23B 4528
Description:  Missouri Pacific U23B 4528 was with three geeps in the railroad's Avondale Yard, just west of New Orleans. The 4528 was one of seven MP General Electric units equipped with EMD cabs after their original cabs were damaged beyond easy repair. The railroad had spare EMD cabs available, and as an added benefit, they provided more headroom than GE cabs.
