LERR (L&A) 2-8-2 563
Title:  LERR (L&A) 2-8-2 563
Description:  The newest locomotives on the Louisiana & Arkansas were Mikados 561-565, built by Lima in August 1936 at a cost of $60,810.26 each. In January 1952 Paulsen Spence purchased the 562, 563 and 565 for $5800 each to use on his Louisiana Eastern, but none were ever restored. Mr. Spence died on 31 October 1961, about nine months after this photo was made of Louisville & Nashville fireman Ken Marsh inspecting the 563. Twenty-nine locomotives – including the 563 – were scrapped here between September and December 1962.

L&N Mikado 1514
Title:  L&N Mikado 1514
Description:  After having set off its through freight at GENTILLY YARD, Louisville & Nashville J-3 class Mikado 1514 leads an auxiliary water car, a box car, and a caboose southbound across Canal Street. The box car is probably LCL (less-than-carload freight) consigned to Acme Fast Freight. After Work War II – and lasting into the early diesel era – it was common for freight trains to leave most of their cars at GENTILLY, and then bring their LCL and perishable cars all the way to JULIA STREET YARD. The vehicles on the right are waiting to board the Mississippi River ferry to the suburb of Algiers. (approximate date of photo)

IC Locomotives at Mays Yard
Title:  IC Locomotives at Mays Yard
Description:  Illinois Central “improved” 2-8-2 1672 and four other freshly-serviced locomotives were simmering away on the ready track at the railroad’s MAYS YARD, just west of New Orleans. The yard never had a turntable, so locomotives were turned a wye. The track in the foreground is the north leg of the wye, while the south leg is on the other side of the engine house which can be seen in the background on the left. The 1672 was built by Lima in 1918 as IC 1882, was renumbered 1370 in April 1943, renumbered 1672 in March 1954 and scrapped in July 1956, so we can narrow the time period of this photo by these last two dates.
