Bonhomie & Hattiesburg Southern Steam |
Description: |
This photo illustrated the entire roster of the Bonhomie & Hattiesburg Southern on 5 July 1961. Prairie 250 (BLW 59239) was ready to go to work at the railroad’s yard in Hattiesburg, Mississippi while Mikado 300 (BLW 58241) was having its smokebox cleaned. This photo was taken on the day the railroad’s former master mechanic Grover Cleveland Logan was laid to rest. Mr. Logan had been responsible for keeping the B&HS in steam; but several months later, on 21 October the railroad bought a pair of former Wabash SW1’s, and after they arrived, steam was dead. The 250 was sold to the Wanamaker, Kempton & Southern in Pennsylvania, while the 300 was placed on display next to the Southern Railway’s station in Hattiesburg. |

Southern Steam Special |
Description: |
The 1973 national convention of the National Railway Historical Society was held in New Orleans, and the main event was this steam excursion over the Louisville & Nashville to Pascagoula, Mississippi and back. The train included 2-8-0 722 with water tender WT 51, 2-8-2 4501 with the WT 50, and 18 cars: sleeper 2422 LAKE PEARL, combine 726, coaches 1087, 1081 and 1086, commissary car CG 405, coaches 3659, 1067, 1068, 1037, 1036 and 1034, commissary car 4061, coaches 1038, 1039, 1046, 1069 MISSIONARY RIDGE and 1056 LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN.Here - under dismal skies - was the westbound run (southbound by the L&N timetable) making the second of two photo run-bys on the Bay St. Louis trestle. Only one run-by was planned, but two of the passengers - SCL president Prime Osborne and Southern Railway president Graham Claytor - saw how much fun all of the photographers were having and decided to do this one more time! This bridge was fairly new, having been opened for traffic on 2 August 1967. |

Northbound Ferry Trip |
Description: |
On Monday 19 November 1984 Southern Railway 4501 was heading out of New Orleans after a pair of weekend trips to Hattiesburg and back on the DEEP SOUTH STEAM EXCURSIONS. The ferry trip was photographed on the New Orleans Terminal Co. at milepost 4. It consisted of water car W.T. 53, GP38 2723, a coal gondola, combine 726, lightweight coaches 841, 842 and 843, commissary car 4061, and heavyweight coaches 1067, 3659, 1068, 1081, 1086, 1087 and 1056 LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN. The GP38 was added to the northbound train on Saturday because of bad coal on the 4501 and remained on the train. The next year would be 4501’s last visit to the Crescent City and the final DEEP SOUTH STEAM EXCURSIONS. |
