Illinois Central 0-6-0 268 was photographed at the upriver (railroad south) end of STUYVESANT DOCKS YARD in New Orleans. The building in the left background was the old Napoleon Avenue Power Station, which closed in 1908; and was later used by New Orleans Public Service as a training school for streetcar motorman. The 268 had been built by Alco’s Schenectady Works in June 1914 and was sold to the Masonite Corp. in July 1953 for use at Laurel, Mississippi. It was subsequently placed on display at DAPHNE PARK in Laurel. (approximate day of photo) |

Most of the Louisiana & North West Railroad’s locomotive roster was sitting on the crossing with the Kansas City Southern’s MERIDIAN SPEEDWAY at Gibsland, Louisiana. Out-of-service GP9 51 (ex-UP 230) and GP35 54 (SSW 776 / 6516) were being moved by GP40 57 (DT&I 400 / GTW 6400), GP7 53 (ATSF 2666 / 2152) and GP11 55 (IC 9338 / 8717). |

A southbound Canadian National-Illinois Central grain train was rolling passed milepost 859 in Hammond, Louisiana. The 120-car train was powered by SD40-2 6112, Grand Trunk SD40M-2 5951 and SD40R 6000; and was headed for a grain elevator along the Mississippi River upstream from New Orleans. The track on the left is the line to Baton Rouge. |
