CN-IC Q-192
Title:  CN-IC Q-192
Description:  Canadian National-Illinois Central Q-192 was heading south through Hammond, Louisiana with 87 cars of mixed freight and 12 of intermodal. Q-192 was previously IC IO-3 which had been a dedicated intermodal train between Chicago and New Orleans; but by this time most of its tonnage was mixed freight and there was very little intermodal traffic left on this route. Q-192 was powered by GTW SD40M-2 5949 and CN-IC SD40-2 6100, and the track on the left was the line to Baton Rouge.

SP (T&NO) 2-6-0 491
Title:  SP (T&NO) 2-6-0 491
Description:  Southern Pacific (Texas & New Orleans) Mogul 491 was parked at the railroad’s Algiers Shops, just across the Mississippi River from New Orleans. This loco was one of 15 2-6-0s built by Baldwin in 1909 for the Cananea, Rio Yaqui y Pacifico in Mexico as their 515-529. In 1912, this railroad became the Sud Pacifico de Mexico and three of these locomotives passed on to the SPdeM, while six went to the Arizona Eastern and six to the Houston & Texas Central. The 491 was built as CRYyP 517, became H&TC 560 in 1912, then T&NO 560 in 1934 and was renumbered T&NO 491 on 15 May 1950. The loco shows some evidence of its recent renumbering, and it was the last of this group to be retired. It was scrapped at Houston on 26 October 1953.

IC Locomotives at Mays Yard
Title:  IC Locomotives at Mays Yard
Description:  Illinois Central “improved” 2-8-2 1672 and four other freshly-serviced locomotives were simmering away on the ready track at the railroad’s MAYS YARD, just west of New Orleans. The yard never had a turntable, so locomotives were turned a wye. The track in the foreground is the north leg of the wye, while the south leg is on the other side of the engine house which can be seen in the background on the left. The 1672 was built by Lima in 1918 as IC 1882, was renumbered 1370 in April 1943, renumbered 1672 in March 1954 and scrapped in July 1956, so we can narrow the time period of this photo by these last two dates.

UP GP60 2023
Title:  UP GP60 2023
Description:  Union Pacific GP60 2023 was in local service on a former Texas & Pacific branch line at Brusly, Louisiana - not too far from Baton Rouge. The locomotive had been built in Canada in April 1991 as Southern Pacific 9724, was renumbered Union Pacific 5823 in June 1998 and became UP 2023 in November 2002 so its former number could be assigned to a new GE unit.
