L&N CNX |
Description: |
On the Sunday before Christmas 1964 Louisville & Nashville EXTRA 661 SOUTH was entering the New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal EASTERN CONNECTION at East City Junction. For many years the L&N operated southbound CNX - and northbound NCX - mail and express extras between Cincinnati and New Orleans during the Christmas Season. These trains were typically 15-20 cars long and ran with a caboose. The tracks on the left belonged to the Southern Railway's New Orleans Terminal Co., and that was East City Tower on the extreme left. The train was four miles from its destination at NOUPT, and the photo was taken with a plastic Kodak STARMETER camera. |

Jefferson Avenue Interlocking |
Description: |
One of the more interesting pieces of trackwork in the New Orleans area was this crossing of the New Orleans Public Belt (in the right foreground) and the Illinois Central Gulf. The NOPB's COTTON WAREHOUSE YRAD was on the right and the orange water tower was in the ICG's STUYVESANT DOCKS YARD. These crossings were removed around 1995, when the two railroads combined and simplified their tracks between Southport Junction and Stuy Docks. |

ICG Mays Yard |
Description: |
A small group of people had gathered outside the Illinois Central Gulf's LOUISIANA DIVISION HEADQUARTERS OFFICE at Mays Yard to watch the AMERICAN FREEDOM TRAIN pass on its way into New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. It was probably the first time a 4-8-4 had even run over these tracks. IC SW9 460 was off to the left. |

KCS Retirement |
Description: |
Kansas City Southern engineer and railfan Robert "Tillie" Blank and his wife were being honored on his retirement. The event was in the lunch room at WEST YARD, just outside of New Orleans. Bob went into engine service on the New Orleans Public Belt around 1940, and after a couple of moves spent most of his railroad career as an engineer on the Louisiana & Arkansas/Kansas City Southern. He was a regular engineer on the SOUTHERN BELLE during that train's later years. |
