Yards |
Description: |
In this northwestward view of the Southern Pacific and Missouri Pacific yards at Avondale, Louisiana the SP's turntable and little roundhouse were in the foreground, with two sets of road power on the right and a quartet of transfer geeps on the left. The MoP's diesel shop was in the upper left, and the Mississippi River flowed from left to right across the top of the image on its way to the Gulf. The roundhouse and diesel shop are long gone, as are the SP and the MoP! |

Best Friend |
Description: |
The Southern Railway's replica of the BEST FRIEND OF CHARLESTON was giving rides to the public on a siding just north of the railroad's station in Slidell, Louisiana. The train is now behind the Charleston Visitor Center, so we'll probably never see anything like this again. |

NOPB SW1000 103 |
Description: |
On a beautiful January morning New Orleans Public Belt SW1000 103 was parked dead along the Mississippi River at South Carrollton Avenue with no one around. This was the job that went out most afternoons to switch industries around the east end of the Huey P. Long Bridge, and something must have happened before they got back to Cotton Warehouse Yard which was about two miles away. |
