At 1PM on New Year's Eve 1971 the westbound SUNSET LIMITED was pulling out of New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal as four railfans watched. The train had four locomotives and 15 cars: SP FP7 6455, SP F7B 8290, UP E9B 912B, UP E8A 929; baggage-dormitory car SP 3102, 10-6 sleepers ATSF Pine Ring and Pine Lodge, SP 9015, SOU Dan River and SP 9021, diner-lounge SP 10411, coaches ATSF 2869, 2823 and 2820, automat SP 10609, and coaches ATSF 2819, 2836, 2822 and 2832.
