Southern Pacific train No. 2 – the eastbound SUNSET – was sitting in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal shortly after its arrival from Los Angeles. (Its scheduled arrival time was 7:45 PM.) The train consisted of FP7 6455, an unidentified E9A and about six cars, but the first two cars were dead-heading. (approximate date of photo) |

Description: |
On the last day of daily operation, the eastbound SUNSET was rolling into the station at Lafayette, Louisiana with its usual 4-car consist and some deadheading cars. From now on, the train would operate tri-weekly; but its consist would include a dining car and a sleeper, amenities which had been absent for a few years. |

Five Southern Pacific F-units were powering Amtrak train No. 0, the westbound SUNSET, passed the Gibbons Feeds building on their way out of New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. The image was taken about'two months after the inauguration of Amtrak, but could have been taken in the previous decade. The Gibbons Feeds building was a long-time landmark at this location, and was razed soon after this photo was taken. (approximate date) |

At 1PM on New Year's Eve 1971 the westbound SUNSET LIMITED was pulling out of New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal as four railfans watched. The train had four locomotives and 15 cars: SP FP7 6455, SP F7B 8290, UP E9B 912B, UP E8A 929; baggage-dormitory car SP 3102, 10-6 sleepers ATSF Pine Ring and Pine Lodge, SP 9015, SOU Dan River and SP 9021, diner-lounge SP 10411, coaches ATSF 2869, 2823 and 2820, automat SP 10609, and coaches ATSF 2819, 2836, 2822 and 2832. |

SDP45s were never very common on the SUNSET; but here is SP 3200 behind FP7s 6455 and 6454 on the westbound train in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal. The 3200 is filling in for a pair of F-units. The 11-car train has baggage car ATSF 3550, three 10-6 sleepers SP 9022, ATSF PALM TOP and SP 9000, diner SP 10211, dorm-lounge ATSF 1340, and five coaches ATSF 2867, 2826, 2856, 2847 and 2889. |
