TRANSCONTINENTAL STEAM EXCURSION
Amtrak’s first and only TRANSCONTINENTAL STEAM EXCURSION, featuring former AMERICAN FREEDOM TRAIN and originally Southern Pacific 4-8-4 4449, had just arrived in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal behind Illinois Central GP9 9016 and GP10 8277. The 4449 had developed a boiler problem earlier in the day after running through a crossover at high speed in Hazlehurst, Mississippi; and the IC geeps rescued the train after the 4449 finally failed 20 miles from NOUPT.
