AFT 4449 |
Description: |
When the AMERICAN FREEDOM TRAIN was on its way from Jackson, Mississippi to Baton Rouge via the Illinois Central Gulf, it made a brief stop in Hammond, Louisiana to pick up media personnel for the last 45 miles of the trip. Here, the train had just pulled onto the line from Hammond to Baton Rouge and stopped so that folks could get an up-close look at 4-8-4 4449; and then it would make a second stop so that the guests could board the last car. Notice Uncle Sam bending down on the left of the loco. |

In this view, the 4449 (and its tool car) had run around the train and was about to couple on to the last car so it could pull the train backwards to its display site. The Louisiana state capital building is the tall building on the left. |

AFT 4-8-4 4449 |
Description: |
Shortly after dawn on Thursday 13 May 1976 American Freedom Train 4-8-4 4449 and tool car PNWX 76 were heading north out of New Orleans on the Illinois Central Gulf in Kenner, Louisiana. The Freedom Train had run from New Orleans to Mobile over the Louisville & Nashville the previous Monday behind a pair of L&N geeps, because the railroad would not allow the 4449 to operate over some of the bridges along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, so the engine and tool car ran alone until they eventually caught up with their train. |

AFT 4449 |
Description: |
It's 7:09 A.M. as American Freedom Train 4-8-4 4449 and tool car 76 head north on the Illinois Central Gulf at Pass Manchac, Louisiana. When the American Freedom Train arrived in New Orleans on the Illinois Central Gulf's Baton Rouge District, it was pulled by this 4-8-4; but when it departed on the Louisville's & Nashville, it left behind a pair of GP38-2's because the 4449 was too heavy for some of the L&N's bridges. The 4449 -- accompanied by tool car 76 -- ran up the ICG to Jackson and then east to Meridian, and then over the Southern Railway to Birmingham, where they rejoined their train. |

TRANSCONTINENTAL STEAM EXCURSION |
Description: |
Amtrak’s first and only TRANSCONTINENTAL STEAM EXCURSION, featuring former AMERICAN FREEDOM TRAIN and originally Southern Pacific 4-8-4 4449, had just arrived in New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal behind Illinois Central GP9 9016 and GP10 8277. The 4449 had developed a boiler problem earlier in the day after running through a crossover at high speed in Hazlehurst, Mississippi; and the IC geeps rescued the train after the 4449 finally failed 20 miles from NOUPT. |
