Southern Railway Train No. 194
Title:  Southern Railway Train No. 194
Description:  Southern Railway train No. 194 was heading north through Slidell, Louisiana behind Southern Pacific U33C 8782, SD45T-2 9190 and a third SP unit. This run-through train between Houston and Birmingham was just south of the Slidell station, and the track in the foreground was the south leg of the wye that had served a creosote plant along nearby Bayou Bonfouca. A creosote plant was first built here in 1892 to treat wood for the New Orleans & Northeastern Railroad’s trestle across Lake Pontchartrain. The plant closed in 1970 and the area was subsequently designated as an EPA Superfund site. After the creosote-contaminated soil was incinerated and the wye was removed, a 54-acre area west of the railroad station which once included the wye and the creosote plant was redeveloped by the city as HERITAGE PARK.
