Amtrak PANAMA |
Description: |
Amtrak SDP40F 616 and a sibling power the northbound PANAMA LIMITED out of New Orleans over New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal track. The debris along the track are the remnants of the platforms at the former Carrollton Avenue Station. The former inbound main line had been located to the right of the train, but was removed in around 1969. Signs such as the one on the right were placed on several of the communication poles along here so that engineers on inbound trains stopping at the station wouldn't block Carrollton Junction, where the NOUPT Eastern and Western Connections separated. When NOUPT opened in 1954, the common use of train radios was still a decade or more in the future! (date approximate) |

Amtrak Train No. 59 |
Description: |
On a rainy Fall day Amtrak train No. 59, the southbound PANAMA LIMITED, was pulling into the station at Hammond, Louisiana behind SDP40F units 617 and 617 as the engineer of an Illinois Central Gulf local looked on. ICG GP8 7851 was in the background, on the south leg of the wye. At that time, Amtrak units 612-619 were regularly assigned to the PANAMA. |
